Nik Krasno | 19885 comments The vision stroke me as a little shortsighted, but maybe I have an awful taste in music (and not only).
Anyhow, it's Portugal then, proving that never-winning may stop one day.
Anyone watched?

message 2: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 1579 comments I watched the semifinal last night. There were many white dresses and shirts and wind machines...

message 3: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments If I remember correctly, Eurovision boasted to be globally the most watched TV event.
Is anyone following how it goes this week in Portugal?

message 4: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 1579 comments I read that Australia's entry, Jessica Mauboy, has made it to the final, but I haven't actually heard her song 🤣

However, I did spend a good chunk of last year helping run a musical called 'Song Contest: Almost Eurovision.' I am now very familiar with spoofing Eurovision effectively.

message 5: by Ian (new)

Ian Miller | 1857 comments It is rather odd that Australia gets an invite into Eurovision and nobody else does. How did they manage that? Anyone know?

message 6: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments Congrats Netta, well done Israel! See you in Jerusalem next year

message 7: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments She's actually from my town. Unlike some other municipalities, supporting their competing residents previous years, ours was completely silent, indifferent. With looming mayoral elections this fall, I just anticipate how all candidates will now start courting her all of a sudden -:)

message 8: by Judith (new)

Judith Rand | 16 comments A great comment on the public that a performer who looks different, acts different, and seems to thrive on being different appeals to the public. Her instructors in the Music Conservatory which she attended all said she was a great Musician and was serious about her studies. Congratulations!!

Yeah, something like flying Nik, instead of the carpet -:)
There were years that I'd spent most of the year in Ukraine, but not anymore and already for many years now..

message 10: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments Anyone's watching perchance?

message 11: by Philip (new)

Philip (phenweb) Someone claiming to be Madonna is on!!!!

message 12: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments She threatened to leave over controversies with the producers, but stayed and in the end we might get to enjoy a couple of songs from her

message 13: by Philip (new)

Philip (phenweb) Enjoyment was not the word I would use - even one of the commentators stated she was out of tune.

message 14: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments Agree, wasn't much of an enjoyment - a bit disappointing performance on Madonna's part, allowing for all the fuss.
And congrats to Holland!
Can't say that I was impressed by his song, but millions of other were - and that's what he needed

message 15: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments After the previous year's event was cancelled through corona, it returned yesterday. Not super exciting as usual, but a few performances were kinda nice. Has anyone watched?

message 16: by Terese (new)

Terese | 16 comments Watched and thought it was what one expected, and as always I didn’t like the song that won, haha.

message 17: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments Terese wrote: "Watched and thought it was what one expected, and as always I didn’t like the song that won, haha."

Can't say I was blown away by the winning song either, nor by the one winning two years ago :)
Somewhat kinky, but at least in the language of the country, as were the runner ups. Looks like returning to the mother tongue struck a chord with the audience this year.

message 18: by Philip (new)

Philip (phenweb) Nil point....

message 19: by Nik (last edited May 24, 2021 01:41AM) (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments Philip wrote: "Nil point...."

Post-Brexit anti-Britism? :) Or maybe sometimes it feels like the UK disregards the contest on purpose

message 20: by Philip (new)

Philip (phenweb) More likely Europe disregards UK. Usual round of political voting.

message 21: by Terese (new)

Terese | 16 comments Well, other countries have gotten 0 before, and Germany got like 3 points... bland pop song just doesn't stand its ground anymore, people seem to want stuff like what Ukraine sent which is either love or hate reactions.

And I'm all for returning to the mother tongue, I want them quirky and particular, that's part of the fun. This year so many sounded kind of the same, it is kind of boring.

message 22: by Philip (new)

Philip (phenweb) 99 Red Balloons was brilliant in German and English

message 23: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments The Norwegian - Belarusian 2009 Eurovision winner, looks fairly excited by the current winning song:

message 24: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments Meanwhile, the Eurovision is held in Liverpool, substituting for Ukraine. Alas, but Brits give it solid representation. After the semis, the main event is to take place on Sat

message 25: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments For those interested, here is the entire playlist:

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments Congrats, Sweden! Soon in NATO 😎

message 27: by Nik (last edited Mar 16, 2024 04:49AM) (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments The contest is to take place in a couple of months, while Croatia is already a bookies' fav: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTBrV...
and Israel is gonna compete with Harry Kane https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJYn0...

message 28: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments With Ukraine and Israel getting over 300 votes each from the public despite lukewarm vote from the tv corporations, I know where people’s hearts are.
Thank you, guys!
Switzerland wins, Ukraine - 3-d, Israel - 5th!
Wha? Britain gets 0 votes from public? Shame

message 29: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments Israel gets the 2-nd highest televote! Mind you that you cannot vote for your own country, so all the votes came from all over the world!🌍

message 30: by Ian (new)

Ian Miller | 1857 comments The question that bothers me is, is that really where music is going? From what I saw, a banshee could do better :-)

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Eurovision used to be about song + performance. Then it became about performance + song. Then it introduced some bias towards cause celebres. Then it became about performance + cause celebres only. Now it's purely to do with cause celebres.

Tbh, it shouldn't even be called Eurovision anymore, as Australia is in it.

Basically, it's just a fun night for the world's gay wokes. Nothing wrong with that, of course, just gotta recognise it for what it is.

Bet Russia wasn't invited lol.

message 32: by Ian (new)

Ian Miller | 1857 comments They wouldnt be missed. Not enough gay wokeness.

message 33: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments Say whatever, Eurovision is one of the most watched TV events and one of the oldest running show. While gay element is there, it’s hardly defining and each year it offers at least some interesting songs. It’s also a good reflection of where Europe’s hearts are

message 34: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19885 comments Austria wins (judges’ choice), Israel - second (public’s choice). Not bad
