I'm not sure if it's a match, but this reminds me of one of Mary Brown's books - maybe Pigs Might Fly or The Unlikely Ones?
I'm almost certain this book started off in the real world, with her living by the lake where she was quite lonely and isolated, and then travelling across it to the magic world. There she was a renowned sorceress or a princess or something special but there was lots of court intrigue going on.
There definitely do seem to be some similarities, but I'm pretty sure from reading the reviews that this isn't it. I don't think there were elves in it, just sorcerers. Thanks for the suggestion though :)
Found this when looking for something completely different but I'm fairly confident this is it.A Sorcerer's Treason by Sarah Zettel

I read this in the early 2000s, I think.
It was a fantasy book. The main character was a woman and she travelled to a castle or big house, where a man she didn't like gave her some kind of magic bracelet (probably a bracelet) which made her think she was in love with him.
A lake was important in the story somehow - she may have started off in a small house on one side of the lake and travelled across it into a different world/country.
The name Sara or Sarah may have had something to do with it Or maybe Mary. I think t was a female author and I think the cover of the book was purplish, possibly with a picture of the lake on it.
Edits:
- Started off in the real world with her living by the lake where she was isolated and then traveling across it to the magic world.
- In the real world she was outcast but in the fantasy world she was important/popular - maybe a princess or a sorceress.
- There was lots of court intrigue and people trying to get her on their side.
-I think the real world was a real place - a lake in North America somewhere, maybe.
