An Echo in the Bone discussion

First of all let me say, I am a HUGE fan of this series. I am completely in love with Claire and Jamie as am I with Brie and Roger!! That said, while he is an interesting character, I have no interest in the political affairs of William. The parts about his position, the war and his political posts bore me to no end.
My question is, can I skip those parts without losing parts of the story line that will cause confusion regarding the C & J and B & R story lines?

I took a break midway through this book, and after reading five other books I'm ready to read the rest starting tomorrow. I definitely skimmed over a good share of the William/political stuff. I'm sure that there are plenty of people who are interested in it, but I am not one of them. If I get confused later I'll just look online.
