Will | 26 comments Quite by chance, talking about the FA Cup Final next Saturday and how football is getting so dominated by big money (and bigger egos?) I was reminded of what many people consider to be one of the best (yet little known) novels ever written about sport…

J.L. Carr “How Steeple Sinderby Wanderers won the FA Cup”…

Carr was a wonderful novelist, but a private man: “Writing was always something to be done for fun rather than financial reward and he was too much, in his amateur way, part of a vanishing tradition in English letters to be considered fashionable.” This was how the The Times in its obituary summed up J L Carr (1912-94).

And, if football’s not your thing, then try his book “A Month in the Country” – it’s an absolute delight!
