I recommend Grendel by John Gardner. I read it for assigned reading, but this book one of the most well-plotted books I have ever read.Grendel is a beast living in medieval Denmark, who spends majority of his time terrorizing the village folk and hating the world around him. Grendel's curiosity of his own existence and purpose cause him to seek help from multiple characters throughout the novel, hoping to find new meanings of his seemingly miserable life.
This book is powerful, tragic (lots of people die), stomach-churning, and leaves you feeling powerless. Left me with a pit in my stomach multiple times. It gives you a whole new perspective of what grief is like and challenges you to think very critically. It rewards you with different philosophical intelligence. 10/10.
Ringworld is certainly one i would recommend to those who enjoy reading science fiction while keeping basic understanding of scientific capabilities close to them. While Ringworld is not traditionally hard sci-fi, as the Ringworld itself is much further ahead in the future than our current understanding is, the book does a great job at embracing at the very least fundamental knowledge of physics and other sciences.
