My reading goal this summer is to spend as much or more time reading than I write. Always, when presented with free time, I am forced to choose between two activities. My first option is to go out into the forest to come up with poems (or the story I am currently trying to write) and listen to the wild sounds of everything and to run and to breath and to walk and think and find good blackberries and so on. My second option is to sit beneath a tree and listen to other's thoughts in my mind, to read books.
I love reading and I almost always have plenty of good books in mind, but I also enjoy writing (which takes time). I've got to find time for both. I think of Stephen King's “If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write." And I've noticed how very true this is with my own writing. I have more ideas for my own poems the more I read other's poetry. I have more ideas on how to approach my own book every time I read a good novel.
I'll know if I reach this goal because I will keep track of how many early mornings and afternoons and evenings and late nights I spend writing vs reading good books. It won't be exact, I'll just record each day that I spent an afternoon (3 ish hours reading) and then I spent that night finishing up a poem for about 3 hours as well (or some other combination of time of day and hours ish). I'm pretty sure this won't lead me to write less (I would go crazy if I didn't work through my own thoughts), it should only help me read more.
..... But of course this goal does not begin until June 17th, so until then I shall frolic about as much as I'd like in the forest with my notebook and pen and my own narrow thoughts (I'm slightly kidding). Thank you very much!
My goal is to read about books that I can learn from. I love science and love reading about theoretical physics. So I want to read more about those kinds of topics so I can learn more and widen my base of knowledge. I am hoping to read roughly two or three books about physics and maybe some other lighter books and comics to balance it out. 1) read two to three science books
2) read at least one or two other books of any kind
My goal is pretty generic, but nonetheless personal. I want to read at least 3 books so that I can get back into reading. I lost that habit a couple years back due to various circumstances. So I decided to challenge myself to start again by taking this class.
My goal for the summer (that I have been completing I just haven't posted it till now) is to simply enjoy the books I read and allow myself the tome to become absorbed in the universe created in the novel.
I forgot to post it before this, but my goal for the summer is, first of all, to read as many books as possible, and also to read as many books as I can by the same authors. I decided on a few favorite authors, and then read a bunch of books they've written, so then I could really see what it was about their writing that I especially liked. I figured this would also help me with my writing in response, because I would learn the certain techniques those authors used to make their writing so memorable.

As with all goals, make sure it's SMART:
Specific
Measurable (you'll be able to know if you reached it)
Appropriate/Achievable (not too hard, not too easy)
Relevant (to you and your interests)
Time-Based (summer!)
