Annie O'Neill has a comfortable, predictable life with her bookstore and a neighbor to share her evenings. Past relationships have not raised her confidence in others to be there for support in though times. And the disappearance of her father at an early age and her mother's not sharing details about him have left her with a gaping hole at the center of her life.

So when an elderly man comes to her bookshop with promises of tales about her father, she yearns for details that would allow her to move on. But before he will tell her all, he wants her to read a manuscript in installments, a way to revive a book club he shared with her father.

This one was a bit slow to get into, but what I like about Ellory is how deep into the soul of his characters he will take us, sharing their inner conflicts and uncertainties, and the sense of history he will infuse into the parts dealing with the past. I was not disappointed.
