I nominate The Slaves of Solitude by Patrick Hamilton. First published in 1947. 1,348 ratings. Average 4.07 rating. Takes place at a boardinghouse in Britain during WWII.
I nominate The Dirty Dust: Cré na Cille by Máirtín Ó Cadhain. Considered an Irish classic and actually originally published in Irish (that was a very strong reason for me to buy it in the first place, I totally admit it). Published first in 1949, 283 ratings, 59 reviews, average rating 3.74.
I nominate Whose Names Are Unknown by Sanora Babb. 774 ratings, 4.09 average rating. This story of a farm family's struggle during the Depression was supposed to be published in 1939. The Grapes of Wrath came out and the book was shelved until the University of Oklahoma Press rescued it in 2004.
