Rule one?

It's a cool idea! Master Pater was thinking though when he said "say it! 'Protect and honor your king'". It seems unlikely that Kade would have him only think the first part of the word. Kingdom is what it seems to be working out to though. Of course his friends kind of need a kingdom to safely live in, so that could be driving it.

If I remember correctly, the master who imparted rules 1 and 2 to Rez was the kinder, more reasonable one. It seems unlikely that he would tell Rez to serve a tyrant king, so maybe he actually meant to tell Rez to protect the kingdom.
The second reason is that throughout both books Rez mentions on numerous occasions that his purpose is to protect his friends and his kingdom. Kel seems to equate these goals as being one and the same, as does Rez. It therefore makes sense that the incorrect rule of "protect and honor your friends," would still result in the desired outcome of "protect and honor your kingdom."
