Liz Apologies if this theory was already mentioned in a previous post; I'm another monolingual Yank, so I wouldn't know. Anyway....

After finally giving this delightfully weird book a full re-read, I think I might be close to cracking what it's actually about. And I'm starting to feel kind of stupid for it, and maybe everyone will roll their eyes and go "no sh-t Sherlock" (as tends to happen when I reveal my revelations). But here it goes.

This book is a metaphor for itself. The Rabbi, the Priest, and the Dervish are the Jewish, Christian and Muslim books. Princess Ateh is the reader, who has to decide which book to side with, and no matter what she chooses she'll be doomed. (The book says at the beginning that the reader is dead as of opening it.) The characters who keep being reincarnated are symbols for symbols. Something that has the same core meaning/role to play, but is constantly presented with a different face.

That's all I have for right now. I'll be back if I come up with anything else.
