Last year I read the "Modern Sociological Theory" the 7th edition by G.Ritzer, in a greek translation. Modern Sociological TheoryIt includes the most important theories accompanied with a short bio of the theorist that signified it. It's quite legible which could help starters and students in social sciences to have their first contact with sociology. The book has many pages but because of the variety of the issues it deals with, you won't find deepening in one issue.
It was written in 2007-8, so you can find modern and interesting subjects to read like globalization, theory of diversity, critical theories on race and racism etc.

As you said, the sociological theory' books are very useful to get into the first contact with the subject, and let us know the most important modern sociologist in modern topics. Besides, its could help to find a path, that you like, to get more deeper.
What is your social science topic? Favorite book?
The topics I'm interested in most are Sociology of Education and Sociology of Leisure. For the first one, I find very important the work of P.Bourdieu Reproduction in Education, Society and Culture and for the second subject, I've read just a few books but I think Guy Debord's The Society of the Spectacle is my favorite. These books belong to the most-read and are mentioned to many books of the more recent bibliography.[update] Have you read any of them? Which is your opinion?
Society of Spectacle is on youtube for anyone who's interested. I think this is its english subtitled version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CV6k_...

On the other hand, for me Bourdieu' work must be studied not only for the topic but for his approach; I think a lot of research have been worked taking into account field or capitals' schemes, because he gave us a new way to understand the social system. However it is important recognize the Durkheim' contribution to Bourdieu' work, if you read Durkheim' books overall The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life you will find Bourdieu' concepts written several years ago.

So, lets give stories or impressions about books and interchange those diverse approaches or perspectives.
