Miranda paints academia as pretty cutthroat. Any comparison to reality?

I would guess that a chance at tenure would make the whole situation pretty crazy. I can easily see that it would become very cutthroat between the applicants.

My husband was in academia for 20 years. This was pretty accurate based on what I witnessed.

My husband taught 43 years. He tried to avoid the politics, but sometimes it was impossible. The big promotions and raises, sadly, also went to those who played games....

I was a graduate student in a situation where two guys were competing for one tenure track position. It wasn't pretty.

I can't imagine it is any different in the business world. There will always be the stab you in the back types.
