This is a four book maxi-challenge. To complete the challenge you must read 4 books related to the the four compass points: North. South. East. West. You can do this by choosing books with those words in the title or in the author's name. This challenge will run from July until December 31st.

For example:
North: Northanger Abbey
East: The Witches of Eastwick
South: North and South
West: West with the Night
Black Lamb and Grey Falcon by Rebecca West

LindaH | 153 comments Okay. I'm in. Did you know there's a list on GR Listopia with Direction names in titles AND subtitles? I'm just not clever enough to post link here. My first choice is Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West.

That book killed me but it's really great.

I'll look into the Listopeia. Thanks!

Do I have to wait until July 1?

I just finished Tales of the South Pacific by James A. Michener.

LindaH | 153 comments Finished first of four, East Lynne by Mrs Henry Wood.

Sorry, Rosemarie. I just saw your post. Hopefully, you started right away.

Great, Linda; East is done. Are you still planning to read Wounded Knee?

No problem, Renee.

LindaH | 153 comments Renee, For various reasons I'm not going to read Wounded Knee right now. Next year, probably.

BTW, I recommend East Lynne. I think you would like it.

I loved Wounded Knee, but it was very distressing. Even though it's history, it's awful to imagine those things happening.

There are definitely some books I can't read at certain times.

East Lynne looks right up my reading alley! Evil Seducer??? Heheh.

LindaH | 153 comments I'm going to read East by West by Sir Henry W Lucy next. A British journalist/parliamentarian visits America and Japan. He wrote for Punch.

I just saw that East by West is a title read by Ruth Golding, one of my very favorite Librivox volunteers. Definitely check out the recording; she is bound to be wonderful.

message 13: by LindaH (new)

LindaH | 153 comments She's the narrator! That's fun to know, Renee.

message 14: by LindaH (new)

LindaH | 153 comments Finished East by West. Not a book I would recommend. A whole chapter devoted to population numbers in Japan. Arrgh. Still, I pushed on to get that second compass point. Two to go.

message 16: by LindaH (new)

LindaH | 153 comments Finished third point. Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea by Barbara Derick
Good book.

LindaH | 153 comments Finished the fourth point! South and West: from a Notebook by Joan Didion.

Great little book, just published.
