I was to add the 1977 Del-Rey / Ballantine edition, but its isbn is already taken by the 1986's version.

According to this page http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cg... and by the physical copy im holding in my hand, 1977 has 0-345-25750-2. The same page lists 1986 as 0-345-33696-8.

How would you like me to proceed?

should not the isbn point to the first printing of an edition? an isbn search gives 1977 as the year of publishing https://isbnsearch.org/isbn/0345257502.

why don't you lift the unique constraint on isbn in your database if you _do_ allow reprints of the same edition as individual editions?

Goodreads policy is that the first edition added to the database keeps the ISBN or ASIN.

This would be a major change to how our database is set up.
