As the title to this post suggests, I would like to start reading a police procedural or private investigator series. I'd like it to be set no later that the mid-2000's because I'd like the series to depict modern police techniques, technology and dialogue. Preferably set in America so I can understand the geography and cultural references. Any suggestions?

Check out Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series starting with A Darkness More Than Light, the first book written after 2000.Also:
David Baldacci's King & Maxwell series.
C. J. Box's Joe Pickett series.
Alafair Burke's Ellie Hatcher series.
J. A Jance's J. P. Beaumont series starting with Birds Of Prey, and her Joanna Brady series starting with Paradise Lost.
Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire series.
Archer Mayor's Joe Gunther series starting with The Marble Mask.
Toby Neal's Lei Crime series books.
Robert B. Parker's Spenser series starting with Hugger Mugger and his Jesse Stone series starting with Death In Paradise.
John Sandford's Lucas Davenport series starting with Easy Prey and his Virgil Flowers series.
I hope you find something you like.
Private investigator - I like Robert Crais and both his Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series. Also some stand-alones which are more police procedural.

Great list!
I read Robert B. ParkerSue Grafton
Lisa Gardner
Jonathan Kellerman
Faye Kellerman
William Kent Krueger
and I want to start many Bill and Thomas' recommendations, especially Tony Hillerman and daughter and New Orleans's series, too.
I found Dennis Lehane's "Kenzie and Genarro" series to be superb, quite wonderful, complex and incredibly well-written. Be sure to read them in order of publication, as the characters are developed beautifully over time. You may know him from "Mystic River" and "Shutter Island" films.
He also recently wrote the screenplay (then book) to "The Drop", which is a flawless, complex and exciting crime-noir.
I also recently read the entire Spenser series by Robert B. Parker in less than a month. I have not read any of the Spensers published after Parker died, though. The fascinating thing about the Spenser series is that much of it echoes the real-life troubles-then-success of Parker and his wife Joan.
I am reading and loving Jesse Stone, but I intend to read Parker's other series, especially Sunny Randall.
Skye wrote: "I am reading and loving Jesse Stone, but I intend to read Parker's other series, especially Sunny Randall."Of the three, I thought Randall was the weakest one. That may have been because it was only 8 books long and Parker never got the chance to develop her as fully as Spenser or Jesse Stone.
Thanks for letting me know about that ( I named my daughter Sunny long before the name became somewhat popular).
You can't get better than Michael Connelly and his Harry Bosch series. Love them. Liked the TV series as well. Hope they do another season

I'm currently listening to Dennis Lehane and I really enjoy the Kensie and Gennero series. I'm on gone baby gone. I also enjoy Karin Slaughter Grant County series which is told by the police chief, county coroner and female detective point of view.
Kenzie & Genarro are fabulous. Gone Baby Gone Is a Masterpiece. Slaughter by name, slaughter by nature. Far too gratuitously bloody for me.
gone baby gone is pretty bloody too, but I do love the twist. I had a feeling about the twist since all Lehane books seem to have one so far. this one impacted me so much because I currently have kids that age.

I have this book, and seriously, I haven't read it; I have a difficult time with violent graphics.

Skye,I know this is a well, masculine kind of read,if I may say so,but I think I had gotten this from the library, waayy back..I saw his name somewhere online and forgot all about him.I just might get more of his books.
Hi I hope it's ok to mention my book, although it's not a series - yet. I'm working on the sequel. It's a police procedural mystery but not heavy on technical. It's set in 2011. The town's animal shelter director is murdered, and it turns out he was a real monster. It is for people who love dogs & cats - and wish that all shelters really would save them.
