Beyond Reality discussion

Hi everyone,

It's time to open nominations for our October 2017 Books of the Month. Each group member can make 1 science fiction and/or 1 fantasy nomination in this thread. If you would like to make a nomination, please reply to this post with the title and author of the book(s) you would like to put forward for the group’s consideration. A couple of suggestions to keep in mind:

1. Telling us a little about the book and why you think it would be a good group read can help get other members interested in reading (and voting for) your nomination.

2. To see if your nomination has already been read by the group, you can check:

a. the group's bookshelf for Previous Books of the Month

and/or

b. these threads:
Master List of Previous Books of the Month 2012-Present
Master List of Previous Books of the Month 2006-2011

Books the group has read in the past 2 years are not eligible for current consideration. Being chosen as a past BotM prior to that time is not an automatic disqualification, but be aware that it may hinder your nomination’s chances at the polls.

General guidelines:
• Feel free to re-nominate a book that didn’t win in the polls in previous months!
• For questions regarding specifics such as book formats, books in series, self-nomination and various rules for nominations, please see the group FAQ.
• Seconding isn't necessary in this group.
• Friendly discussion & debate is strongly encouraged, but let's please keep things civil.

Poll schedule:
• Nominations will remain open through Friday, July 21.
• The first round of polls will open Saturday, July 22, and will run through Wednesday, July 26.
• The run-off polls go up Thursday, July 27, and will be open through Monday, July 31.

Let's Try A Vision of Fire by Gillian Anderson for Sci Fi.

I nominate Good Omens (Terry Pratchet and Neil Gaiman) for fantasy. The BBC has just started production on a six part TV show to air late this year. It would be fun to read the book first.

For science fiction, I suggest Binti (Nnedi Okorafor).

For Sci-Fi, I try this one again: VALIS by Philip K. Dick.

I would like to nominate The Changeling by Victor LaValle for fantasy.

For SF, my nomination is An Oath of Dogs by Wendy N. Wagner.

Fantasy: Sunshine by Robin McKinley A vampire book like no other!

SF: The January Dancer by Michael Flynn Action, adventure, and metaphysical questions in a rich far-future setting.

For Fantasy, I'll nominate Red Sister by Mark Lawrence.

This is the first book in a new series and I think it's his best so far. The opening line is:

"It is important when killing a nun to ensure that you bring an army of sufficient size."

That was all it took to hook me!

For sci fi, I nominate Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee.

Both seem fitting for the month of October. :)

For SF I'll nominate Shikasta, by Doris Lessing.

And for Fantasy Gloriana by Michael Moorcock again.

I read it and thought it was way overhyped. It wasn't awful, just ok. Don't think it lives up to the accolades it's getting.

NineFox Gambit was my best read of the year without a doubt although Deaths End was close. Reading Taven Stratagem right now!
