▬ magic : as a warlock, kai is able to perform magic. this ranges from potions to verbal spells and summonings, to non-verbal magic such as telekinesis. due to his parentage, kai is an exceptionally powerful warlock, which may be part of the reason that he's managed to live for so long without fading away.▬▬▬▬▬ appearance •
brown haired and brown eyed, kai stands at one ninety-three centimetres tall, and a pair of relatively unnoticeable horns protrude from his forehead at the hairline.▬ PERSONALITY • ▬▬▬
Some might theorise that Kai is slightly mad, but this just isn't true. While he may request and accept unusual payments (oranges, prawn crackers, granite chips and bits of greenstone being a few), most things that Kai does have a reason to them. He reasons that plastic hoops and twine make excellent pentagrams — they do the job, and they're a lot cheaper than fancy chalks. But he also uses elaborate pentagrams, which enables visitors to tell at a glance whether he's summoning a minor demon or a Greater demon. Greater demons need better containment, hence the elaborate pentagrams. When he doesn't have the energy to cast a spell, he'll often just mutter 'go away' menacingly in Hawaiian whilst making hand gestures. Kai isn't mad. He's just practical.
Kai doesn't do stuff without a reason. Either he's getting paid, the person he's doing it for is a friend, or he's doing it for himself.
open-minded & loyal & wary & intelligent & even-tempered▬ HISTORY • ▬▬▬▬▬
Kai was born in Hawaii in 213 C.E. (common era), to a demon and a human woman. His mother died when he was three, and he doesn't remember anything about her. He was raised by another family, treated like one of their own sons. When his powers began emerging and his horns started to appear, the family grew wary of him. He was around thirteen at the time, and old enough to understand that the people didn't trust him. They weren't entirely sure what he was, and rumours spread about who his father might have been.
Knowing that the rumours would only get worse if he stayed, Kai began teaching himself how to control his abilities, and spent most days in a remote corner of the island. He had no guidance, no friends, no family. Yet somehow, he managed to begin to understand his abilities. He realised that it was easiest to direct his power with words — the language seemed to be irrelevant. (Words are actually just an easier way of focusing, but he didn't know that at that time). Unfortunately, this peaceful and safe environment wasn't going to last. The other boys in the village had worked out where he was hiding, and snuck there to torment him. He couldn't control his powers, and they all ended up either injured or worse.
So he ran away. For twenty-three years, he travelled across the globe, surviving by his wits. He encountered others who recognised him for what he was, who explained it to him, and he began to make friends. When he hit thirty-seven he was expecting to stop ageing soon, so it didn't come as much of a surprise.
For the next 1716 years, Kai travelled almost nonstop, but recently came to settle in New York. He was offered the position of High Warlock of Brooklyn, and he took it. He's been here for fifty years.family ;

JAVIER CRISTIANO ANHELO & 25 / 750 & warlock & los angeles & gay
born : 1267 c.e. in the place that would become tenochtitlán (and later mexico city), on the ides of march (though the gregorian calendar wasn't used in that area at that time)
likes : pretty people & sardonic humour & an absence of angst
dislikes : demons & angst & his life & any era before 2012
strengths : sleeping & magic & resilient
weaknesses : stubborn & self-isolating & tends to hole up problems
fears : dying & losing his friends & hurting people
powers : jav can do magic. he's pretty good at it, though that's more from practice than from birth — his mother was only an eidolon, even if she was fairly powerful for one of them.
appearance : dark-haired and standing at one eighty-three centimetres, jav's warlock mark stands out to anyone who sees through the glamour. one dark green eye, and one metallic, glittering bronze.
family : an eidolon & an idiot
alliances : himself & himself & himself
Jav has seen a lot. He may not be particularly old compared with other warlocks, but other warlocks weren't unfortunate enough to be in Salem during the witch trials and accused of being communist during the Cold War (He literally spent two months in prison because he said that capitalist institutions were oppressive). Maybe this explains why he's so bitter, so broken. Or perhaps it's simply that his mother was a demon and his father was a useless slacker, and so he never had a stable life — he barely had a family at all. Whatever the reason, the result is simple: Jav is bitter, broken, and hides all his problems and tries to cope.
There's not much to tell about his history: his mother tricked his father, he was raised in Hell until he escaped at age fifteen and spent several years wandering around Mexico, half-dead and half-mad. He made the mistake of being in Salem during the witch trials and spent a year locked in prison until he escaped (you try doing magic when you're malnourished and exhausted). Then he said the wrong thing in the wrong place at the wrong time during the Cold War, and spent two months in prison (the security was tight, ok?). Then at some point he figured Los Angeles would be nicer and moved there — and voilá, here he has stayed.
DOMINIQUE LE GUIN

150 / 18 ; bisexual
ours
born on the 19th of february 1867 in panama, her family are all long-dead, but bryah was her mother and orlando was her first step-father. her alliances include those in her crew who still walk the earth (the few that there are). currently, dominique can be found in the city of paris.
she likes the ocean, rap and loyalty. her dislikes include those who try to cross her, people who don't take care of their swords, and oysters. dominique's strengths include her confidence, analytical way of thinking, and sailing. her weaknesses are pride, recklessness and her small stature. she fears disappointment, love, and imprisonment.
dominique appears to have turquoise hair, her warlock mark. her eyes are an extremely dark brown, and she stands at one hundred and sixty one centimetres tall. what she lacks in height, she makes up for in personality.
being a warlock, dominique's powers include the ability to perform magic, and portal-making.
❝ you know what they say, bad girls have all the fun — Dominique does not deal lightly with those who cross her. While she may not be evil as such, she's hardly good, and more than willing to break a few body parts to get what she wants. Her reckless nature stems from the loss of her parents at a young age, and governs most decisions she makes. Dom always has a sword handy, her preferred blade being a rapier, although she often fights with a cutlass. As reckless as she may be, Dom knows her flaws and makes sure that she's got a counterbalance in place: whether it be a sword or a friend.
1867, Panama. A tiny, blue-haired baby was born to a loving mother and step-father. So what happened to turn that good child into someone... not evil, but definitely not good? Well, a number of things, but first and foremost, she discovered sailing. When Dom was eight, she and a friend snuck out and stole a small sailing boat. They spent the entire month teaching themselves how to sail it, and then graduated to pestering the sailors to take them out on one of the sloops. After six months of prestering, the two small children were finally allowed to stand on the foredeck of one of the small vessels that were used to transport goods (and people) across the bay (now Bahía de los Muertos).
From that moment on, Dom was determined to become a sailor.
But tragedy struck when she was twelve — her stepfather died, and when her mother remarried it was to a far crueler man. He looked down on her, called her an unnatural monster for her hair and her magic. At this point, she was beginning to understand it better, but it would still burst out uncontrollably at points. And so she spent more and more time out of the house, even sleeping over at her friend's house on occasion. Dom didn't trust her new stepfather to let her do the things she wanted to do, and so while in the house she never mentioned anything that would make him hate her more.
When Dom was fifteen, her mother died of pneumonia. Her stepfather had no interest in looking after her, but Dom had enough money by this point to buy her own brig (a small one, since finding a crew for a larger one would be difficult). She started gathering a crew from the teenagers that roamed the streets around the harbour, often rescuing them from unpleasant situations and giving them somewhere to sleep. The older ones quickly figured out that even though she was three years younger than some of them, she was more competent when it came to sailing, plotting and threatening.
For seventeen years the crew of the Endor terrorised the Pacific Ocean, by which point Dom was forced to explain that she wasn't entirely human, particularly when she stopped ageing. She wasn't the only warlock on the crew, though. But their reign couldn't last, and after a particularly reckless raid on a large port, the ship was pursued by the British forces, and quickly captured. Dom gave herself up in exchange for the rest's freedom, knowing she would likely never see them – or her ship – ever again.
Fortunately, she escaped before the prison guards could realise that she never got any older. Dom stole her ship back and sailed it with magic as far as she could, hiding close to her hometown. Slowly, she managed to track down a few of the crew members — enough to help with her plan. Once she had, Dom explained her plan: sail to France, hide the ship under a glamour and make their way up the Seine to Paris, then live there, safe from the English tyrants.
A hundred or so years later, Dom and [aroth's character] are the only ones left of the original crew. She's working on finding more people willing to join, particularly disadvantaged Downworlders. Maybe Shadowhunters too. — never learned how to count, 'cause i'm number one ❞
