Lily (lilysawyer) | 58 comments Hi I'm Lily,
I've been a Star Trek fan since the beginning. I was a little kid when TOS first aired. But when it came back in syndication in the 70's I was better able to appreciate it. I have seen all the franchises but TOS is my fave and Spock is my #1 fave and Kirk is #2. I love their friendship and adventures of them and the entire crew.

Travis (travishiltz) Welcome.
Been kind of quiet around here, we could use some new blood.
Looking forward to chatting about Trek.

Which is your fave series, Michael? Mine is TOS

message 6: by Steen (new)

Steen Christensen | 1 comments Hi everyone

I'm Steen, from Denmark.
I've been a trekkie since the 1970', where i saw TOS in german tv.
Since then i've read most books from pocket books, but have been side tracked since they "rebooted" the series....
My favorite series is TNG or DS9 hard to tell which is best. I like both captains.

Lily (lilysawyer) | 58 comments I just ordered "Devil's Bargain" and "Assignment Eternity" from E Bay. I can't wait to star reading. I'm currently reading "Weight of the Worlds"

message 12: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) I like pretty much all Trek except the Abrams stuff,, but would have to pick DS9 as my favorite.

I've read a ton of the books and comics, but have fallen pretty far behind.
I enjoy how they keep the franchise going and the stories they tell about the fringes of the Trek-verse.

'Timetrap' sounds familiar. Is it an older book where Kirk travels to the future?

message 13: by Lily (new)

Lily (lilysawyer) | 58 comments I don't like the reboot either, Travis. It just didn't grab me.

Assignment: Eternity is the Gary Seven book, right?
Liked that one. Wish they'd do more with Gary and Company.

The Assignment: Earth comic was a lot of fun.

message 15: by Lily (new)

Lily (lilysawyer) | 58 comments Was the Assignment Earth comic from IDW?

Yes.
It was one of the minis John Byrne did.

Travis (travishiltz) Boy this place place got busy real quick.

Cleaning out a closet, I found a couple boxes of books and discovered a couple Trek books I'd bought and forgotten.
So, I will be adding 'Objective: Bajor", "Section 31: Next Generation" and "Guises of the mind" to my to be read pile.

I have a nice collection of older ST books, that I will look forward reading when I catch up on the current books I am reading. I am looking forward to reading "Mindshadow, Dwellers in the Crucible, the Killing Time(one of my fave) and others. I also want to re read an e book "Miasma" by Greg Cox, it's a short story.

Miasma was a great short story! I should give it reread sometime soon as well.

message 20: by Lily (new)

Lily (lilysawyer) | 58 comments It is a great story. My only complaint is it was TOO short. I wanted it to go on longer :D

Face palm... I can't believe I didn't find this group until now. I've loved Star Trek my entire life, mostly the shows and movies and am now just getting into the books. About 15 in on The Original Series, and am loving it.

message 25: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) Well, then you have just entered a world that should keep you busy for years.
There have been about a ga-zillion books. Series based on shows, new spin-offs etc..
It goes on forever.

And then there's the comic books...

Welcome Nathan! I've been a fan from the beginning. I found out about the novels in the 70's when they were first being published and was hooked. I took a break for a while and came back about 3 or 4 years ago. So I am playing catch up with the books. What have you read so far?

Well, starting with The Original Series first, and will move on from there - here are my favorites so far:

Yesterday's Son
The Abode of Life
Star Trek: Legacies (3 book series)

I just finished The Wounded Sky - which was great, but not a fav.

message 28: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) Nice that you going way back to the early stuff.
While I like all the spin-offs and what-not, those early novels were what got me hooked on Trek.

I am glad you are getting into the novels. Yesterday's Son and Time for Yesterday are some of my faves. I'll have to think for a bit to give you my list. ST Legacies are another great series.

Jen | 11 comments Hello, I'm Jen in Atlanta. I've been a Star Trek fan since I was a kid in the early 80s when I would watch reruns of TOS. For some reason I really had no idea there was a whole world of Star Trek books out there until about two years ago, when I found about sixty of them at a charity shop for 45¢ each. I figured at that price, I couldn't go wrong - even if I didn't like them, the money was going to a good cause. I had no idea what I was missing out on all these years.

Most of the books I have are TOS and TNG and so far my favorites have been:

Spock's World
My Enemy, My Ally
The Romulan Way
The Lost Years
Vulcan's Glory
The Vulcan Academy Murders

message 31: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) Good list
Lost Years is a little blah, but the rest are all pretty solid reads.

David | 1 comments Hi I'm David from Irvine. I didn't come to Trek as a real fan until later in life as it didn't air where I grew up (Eau Claire, WI). However, while living abroad I started Netflixing DS9 and fell in love. I've seen all of it and TNG and most of Voyager but still have TOS and ENT to watch. I actually tend to enjoy books as much as shows so I've read a number of Trek books. Discovery has gotten me back in and I've been reading quite a bit these past few weeks.

Welcome fellow Trekkie. I consider Discovery a separate and completely different kind of Trek. So I try not to make comparisons. At first I did, but I find in order to really enjoy it I try not to make too many comparisons.
My fave will always be TOS. you could probably find it on Netflix. I have Amazon prime and can watch TOS there. If you get the Heroes and Icons channel you can watch all the Trek shows. On Sun they show the animated series. You definitely want to give that one a check. The only day they don't show Trek on that station is on Sats.

message 36: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) I've heard that Discovery is quite good if you don't think about how it connects to any other trek series.

I'm so behind on my TV that it'll be awhile before I find out for myself.

The season finale is this coming Sun. It has been renewed for a second season. I am enjoying it. I like Saru a lot and his relationship with Michael

I really like Saru. My biggest grip was how "un-Federation" like Michael acted in the first few episodes. She's grown on me though - overall I think the season has been fantastic.

I think it's taken time for ST Discovery to really find its footing and it's own identity within the ST world. It is very different than any other ST franchise

I'm very close to being done with The Entropy Effect. Which I'm liking a lot. Next up is The Klingon Gambit. Apparently it isn't very good :( but at least it's short!

message 44: by DianaRS (new)

DianaRS | 1 comments Greetings, all. I'm Diana from western NC. Been a Trekkie all my life (and that's been a loooong time). I joined Starfleet International and a local ST club after the 2009 movie, and got a science fiction/ST reading group going. We're reading 'The Romulan War', a 2-part series set in the post-Enterprise series, written by Michael Martin. It's pretty good; I just finished the 2nd book. I've read a lot of ST novels over the years; as well all know, some are better than others. Diane Duane and David Mack are my favorite authors.

Frank Davis (sansperfection) | 4 comments abigail89 wrote: "Diane Duane and David Mack are my favorite authors."

These are my two favorite Star Trek authors as well!

I loved 'Doctor's Orders' by Diane Duane, it's probably my favorite Trek novel.

and I'm currently half way through the 'Destiny' series by David Mack.

I'm in a ST book club too, but it's all online and it's only been running since February. It's called Star Trek Reading Group, we started it on fb and I've just set up a group for it on GoodReads too :)

Mario the lone bookwolf (mariothelonebookwolf) Hi!

I am 32, from Austria and totally into science fiction, fantasy, humor and science topics and always trying to widen my range.
I try to read as many different authors as possible. But I fail because of a serious lack of consequence so that I often get stuck with series. I really try to avoid that trap.

I have read many of the old and new science fiction, humor and fantasy authors and series. The old ones are sometimes harder to read and I am lazy.
And there are not many easier Titans of my favorite genres left I can read.
With the new ones I have the problem that I don´t certainly know how good they will be. And I don´t want to be the one who runs in the blade of an unsatisfying read. A lack of altruism I guess.
Instead, I wait until the book has enough positive reviews on which I can rely. That´s not gentleman style, I know.
But I cherish people who sacrifice themselves for the sake of other readers with uncertain, newly published books. There should be monuments build for them.

I think the best way to read good books is to cooperate with readers who have similar reading interests. And in the brilliant concept of Goodreads to connect this knowledge to rankings and lists.
I base most of my reading choices on Listopia and have never regretted it. Human swarm intelligence is on its rise.

Best regards

From time to time, I like to read or re-read some Star Trek book, and I'd like to get suggestions of which one is going to be the next one, by reading this group and writing in it. I usually prefer TOS books, but I've read some TNG too.

HI Esther,
I love TOS best. Do you have any faves? I like Dwellers in the Crucible, one I'm currently re reading. Killing Time, Yesterday's Son and Time for yesterday. I have so many faves.

message 50: by Esther (new)

Esther (luthien32) | 2 comments Well, I liked a lot Black Fire, although it was several years ago that I read it! The Entropy Effect is one of my favourites too. And I think I must re-read one from TNG that I enjoyed a lot, although Ican't remember the title now. It was based in Tasha Yar's history, and I remember that I liked it a lot!!
