Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) I read The Paper Magician for my IRL book club. I have a feeling that even though it's a "fluff" read, there's going to be a lot discussion because of its uniqueness and what happens in the second half of the book.

I really enjoyed this story. It was fun, full of adventure and magic. It was also very unique. I have never read a book with this type of magic in it. I hope we get to explore the other types of magic more in the next two.

I really liked all the origami in it since it's one of my favorite hobbies. I even recognized some of the folds Ceony and Emery did.

I adored Emery (view spoiler). And, I did like the protagonist, Ceony, more as the story continued. I also loved Fennel.

The story takes place in England during the 1800s. I enjoyed the setting a lot, but I often felt like we were in modern times. That and the fact that it did drag a little bit in the middle is why I only gave it 4 stars.

I do look forward to reading the other two books in the trilogy, though.

From what I've seen of my IRL book club members' reviews, they don't seem to like it very much either. So, I could be in the minority not you.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8526 comments I think my main problem was that I couldn't help but compare it to The Night Circus, which I loved. This work just suffered in comparison.

Still, it has an average rating of 3.63 on Goodreads, so you are not alone, Jenni.
