I decided to read this short story/novella, which occurs between books 4 & 5, I believe. I really liked it--told from 3 perspectives, a bittersweet tale that fills in a couple holes in the overall story. Nothing crucial to understanding the larger story, but engaging.

And, true to the overall series, it is a love story at its heart. But, also like the larger story, it hits on themes of loyalty, family, and sacrifice.

I generally don't read short stories--I always feel like I'm just getting into the story when it ends. But this was more like three chapters from the series, just the right length for this episode in the overall saga.

Anna (vegfic) I also liked it. I actually rated this half a star higher than any of the novels in the series.

It's marked as 5.5 on the series page. I can't remember if it spoils something for book 5, but there are some mentions in book 6 that make more sense if you've read this.

Thanks for clarifying that--makes more sense than 4.5 in terms of the rest of the series. I was too lazy to look it up.
