2025 & 2026 Reading Challenge discussion

This thread is to discuss Rick Yancey‘s book, The Infinite Sea.

Suggested break down of reading so that you can check in and let us know how you're doing. The following breakdown is purely a suggestion and is therefore not set in stone.

Rather than putting dates for each section I've done it so that it takes into account that not everybody will necessarily have the book at the same time.

I just started this. That opening scene was pretty eerie, the way it was (view spoiler)[told in a very indifferent, removed, 3rd person omniscient POV (hide spoiler)].

I am finished with chapter 18.

I feel like this book is *really* slow-going so far. There has really only been one plot point of consequence -- (view spoiler)[when Ringer shot Teacup; and Ringer is so outwardly cold that it brought *no* emotion to that scene whatsoever! (hide spoiler)]. I like Yancey's writing; he writes prose wonderfully. I just wish there were a little less of it & a little more dialogue & action & emotion.

There has also been the scene where (view spoiler)[someone attacked Zombie & Cassie walks in on them lurking over Sam. I'm not sure what's really going on here yet, however, as the scene cut away before finding out (hide spoiler)]. And at this point, the story hasn't returned to that event yet.

I finished this yesterday. I didn't like it nearly as well as The 5th Wave. It essentially felt like (view spoiler)[a transition novel, where nothing of consequence was happening. The only crucial plot point was Ringer finding out the truth of what was really going on in the world with regard to the "aliens." Other than that, nothing. I kept reading because I thought, for sure, something interesting would come up, but there was nothing.

By the time of the "big reveal" of the truth, I was just ready for the book to be over with. Which is such a shame because I really enjoyed the 1st book. I will probably still read the 3rd book next month, but I really hope it picks up because I don't want to read another long-winded, tedious novel with no real plot. (hide spoiler)]

I've given it 3 stars, but a part of me feels like that has been a generous rating for this novel. I think my enjoyment of the 1st novel has saved this one from a lower rating.
