Tammy Moore | 1 comments I thought I would start the group's first discussion. I am stumbling around a little, so if I did this wrong, I can take what I learn from this try and do better on the next one.

So - Books for Games and Scenarios in Instructional Design ...
I just finished up game Design Workshop: A Playcentric Approach to Creating Innovative Games by Tracy Fullerton. I was very pleased with how thorough it was on the design side all the way through to project management and Testing. About all that it doesn't go into is how to create the artwork and how to actually code the game. If your instructional design horizons include creating games and scenarios, I think you will find this book to be useful.

Do we have IDs in the group that do or want to do serious (educational) games and scenarios? I build for K-12, especially science, so I do quite a lot of these and they are such hits with the students that I want to increase the percentage quite a lot this year and going forward. That was one of the reasons for getting the book. I wanted to hone my skills in the design side of things. If you have not yet tried your hand at a game or scenario, it is very doable with the tools we usually have in our tool chest. Captivate and I am sure Storyline and the others as well are very capable of most 2D educational games and you can even simulate 3D in a Myst style way of using graphics and navigation.

Jump on in and share your experiences, good books on the topic, questions, and work.

I've had this book on my shelf for years but never got around to reading it. Based on Tracey's recommendation, I am going to pick it up.

"Do we have IDs in the group that do or want to do serious (educational) games and scenarios?" I certainly am. I've been involved with simulations/games for learning for years. That's why I participate in the Serious Play conference.

Serious Play, which has often focused on game-based learning for corporate, military, and healthcare, is looking to increase its activity around game-based learning for education. If you are interested Tracey, I can put you in touch with Sue Bohle, the conference organizer.

Great recommendation, Tammy. I'm coming late to the discussion, but I'll definitely add this one to my reading list. A few weeks ago I attended the Narrascope conference and it was quite inspiring, as it focused almost exclusively on the value of narrative and all the design elements connected to that. So, game design has pushed its way closer to the top of my stack of unread topics. :-)
