Years ago, I named one of my cats Duncan Idaho. One of my all time favorite character names (and a great book!)

Maybe it's time for a reread. The first book was so wonderful. I think I read on through the third one and that almost spoiled it for me entirely.

This is why I've never read any of the others in the series. Dune is my all-time favorite book and I just know the sequels won't live up to my expectations and I don't want them ruining Dune for me. :/

Jeeni, I started the second one right after finishing Dune. I didn't care for it and quickly jettisoned it. I didn't want it tarnishing the glow of Dune.

I really enjoyed this grand science fiction classic. The world building was incredible, both the environment of the planet as well as the political and cultural aspects of the world. Although I liked the story and the characters, the book dragged a bit at the beginning for me and some interesting characters were introduced and then they dropped away never to appear again (perhaps they will reappear in the later books in the series). Although the book was published in the 60s, it still seems relevant, fresh and original. I will continue with the series and would recommend it to those looking for a read for August.
Dune won the Hugo in 1966 and the Nebula in 1965. It definitely seemed worthy of the awards to me.
