Wonderful news people. The CIA's resident hitman and the original counter-terrorist of the post-9/11 will be rising once more to rain hell down on the islamist fanatics and bureaucratic busybodies who constantly threaten all we hold dear.

The last time we saw "Ironman", he had recruited some new blood for the Orion Team and had left a Pakistani spymaster quite dead in a villa outside Islamabad. And with a E.S.T set for next year, the return of Mitch Rapp should be a most celebrated occasion.

Now to the specifics. Author is a Mr Kyle Mills who has written 15 best sellers, among them 2 books for the Covert-One series that Robert Ludlum created before his untimely passing.

Mills was also selected by Vince to initially collaborate on a counter-terrorist thriller focusing on the NYPD counter-terrorist division. That project however has presumably been shelved for another time.

He's a fan of the series and as the article notes, has read the previous 13 books to get a feel for the world Mitch Rapp inhabits and even went to the trouble of making notes on Flynn's writing style.

UPDATE: I seem to have mixed up Mr Mills with Mr Brian Haig. Mr Haig was the one who was supposed to do the collaboration novel centering around the NYPD counter-terrorist division as mentioned above with Vince. Apologies for the error.

So, fellow group members. What are your thoughts on this development? Would you read "The Survivor" when it comes out next year? Yes, the move is an attempt to make the franchise into a cash cow by the estate, these things always are. There is also the risk that Mr Mills could cause the franchise to go off the rails like Eric Van Lustbader did for the Jason Bourne series.

However, "The Last Man" left so many plot threads hanging that ending the series at book 13 would have been rather unsatisfactory. And besides, Mills has the chance to take the Mitch Rapp series into new and fresh directions for the current decade and perhaps if this book is successful, conclude the unfinished third part of the American Assassin pre-sequel trilogy where Rapp survived a rainy night in Paris against the villain of Transfer Of Power. Combined with an established brand name, it's a pretty winning combination.

Nick Brett | 141 comments I suppose this is good news if he does a good job and brings the character back to life, but a poor job will leave a sour taste in the mouth. I've read a few books by Mr Mills and they were okay, can't say I was blown away. Hmmm...
I recall that Vince Flynn was going to write something with Brian Haig and a real shame that nothing developed.

On a related note, new cover art.
One of the few things I did not like about the Mitch Rapp books is the cover art. Constantly changing, quite mismatched and it used the "classical" old fashioned font which is a minor pet peeve for me.
But now, they've updated it, made everything uniform and contemporary. Check it out! (NOTE: It's the art for the US paperbacks. UK International ones basically rip off the Jack Reacher cover art.)

Last year, the author did an insightful question and answer session on his website. Part 1. Notes that a key difference between Mr Flynn and his own work is that he's far more morally ambiguous in tone.

The work by Vince Flynn can be divided up into arcs:

1) AMERICAN ASSASSIN, KILL SHOT, (ACT 3)
Covers the beginning of Iron Man's career and his encounter with a terrorist who would play the antagonist in Flynn's most famous work.

2) TERM LIMITS, TRANSFER OF POWER, THE THIRD OPTION, SEPARATION OF POWER
I like to call this the Saddam arc, in which Rapp is used to destroy several initiatives run by the deceased Iraqi dictator's regime.
(Term limits is only added on due to the introduction of Mr Rapp's partner in crime Scott Coleman)

3) EXECUTIVE POWER, MEMORIAL DAY, CONSENT TO KILL.
The matrimony arc. Where Mr Rapp tries to build a workable marriage. Features the most sympathetic and awesome antagonist in the Rapp series and my personal favorite Flynn novel.

4) ACT OF TREASON, PROTECT AND DEFEND.
The Mourning After arc. A new day, a new administration and Mitch has his hands full in trying to do his job with the Office Of National Intelligence trying to skin him alive. Has one of the more action packed entries in the series, particularly with the visit to Mosul.

5) EXTREME MEASURES, PURSUIT OF HONOR.
The mentor arc. Mitch gets himself a new subordinate and inspired by the events of the horrific real world Mumbai incident, Flynn creates a scenario with it occurring in DC.

6) The LAST MAN, THE SURVIVOR.
The current arc, touching on the perils of intelligence services becoming victims to leaks of classified information. In this case the asset network lists, the lifeblood of the CIA.

Since the Mitch Rapp movie is in "development hell", we still have time to ponder and argue about the casting choices. APART from Mitch however, there are other characters we do need to consider, like these people:

1) Irene Kennedy

2) Thomas Stansfield

3) Hurley's subordinate "Victor"

4) If they don't chicken out and change him into some vague stand in, we have the one, the only and the now very dead Imad Mughniyah. While technically not the actual antagonist, (that title goes to Mr Sayid and the chaps from the SVR) Flynn perfectly captured the man's legendary paranoia and capacity for horrific violence in the book and this role would require someone who could scare the living daylights out of the audience.

5) Greta

6) Thomas Ohlmeyer

Which actors would you like to see in these roles?

Another thread discussing the movie has a paranoid rumor regarding Tom Cruise becoming Mitch Rapp. Thing is, he's too old. Back in the American Assassin novel, Mitch was in his 20's and a university graduate. Mr Cruise is 52. Unless they really wanted to rip up that part of the source material, which doesn't even have to be changed, we have nothing to worry about.

Tyler Donoghue | 26 comments Samuel I absolutely cannot wait to read this book. I will devour it multiple times. There's no better character than Rapp and no better author than Vince. Me. Flynn helped me before his passing in so many ways and the series now will be forever bitter-sweet but it's a must read. I owe so much to Vince I'd consider it a disservice to him to not continue with the series. Kyle Mills is a very good and talented author so I'm excited to see where he takes the series.

As for the plot, I agree that there were a multitude of avenues to continue after Last Man and too many unanswered questions. I'm looking forward to the return of a more involved Stan Hurley (spoiler alert) and to see what Rapp does with Louis Gold now apart of his 'team'. If fans of Rapp haven't done so already I recommend downloading the Rapp Encyclopedia for reference as the series continues. I wish Kyle the best of luck and hope he doesn't screw up what Vince worked so hard to achieve.

Well Mr Mills is willing to finish off the American Assassin prequel trilogy so he's got my vote. As for characters, I'm interested to see what happened with Mr Kassar from The Last Man. Did he take the quiet retirement in the states or Kennedy's job offer? Can't wait to find out because he would be a fantastic asset on Mr Rapp's team if he did decide to come work for the CIA.

As for Louis,I agree with you that it will be interesting to see how well he does at his new workplace, and how well Claudia is going to take the news once she finds out what's going on. At least she does know her husband's new client, someone who is far more benevolent than a Saudi Prince or an ISI spymaster, and that might reduce the shock.

Nick wrote: "Tyler makes some interesting points, but if there is "no better author than Vince" it kind of sets up Kyle Mills to end up as 'not as good' doesn't it?"

Well, perhaps we'll end up with a situation similar to Ian Fleming and his first continuation author Kingsley Amis. A book that's perfect on its own merits and well written but "somehow" missing the "essence" of the original author. But I think that might not be the case here. Recently I checked the amazon page again, scrolled down and found a new part had been added to the original chapter teaser. Unlike Greaney and Clancy who had different writing styles, I couldn't discern whether it was Mills or Flynn who had written it. Seems that homework Kyle did on Vince's writing style paid off.

message 22: by Tyler (new)

Tyler Donoghue | 26 comments That's exciting news Samuel. And Nick I did mean to come across as setting Kyle up to fail, however, even if the writing style and everything is identical I will always know it wasn't Vince. So therefore it won't be the same. That's just me. I'm extremely excited that Mills was chosen as the successor and if you haven't done so I recommend reading Fade that he wrote. Best of luck Mr. Mills. Im not implying he will fail I'm saying that it won't be the exact same

There were many reasons why I liked The Last Man. Two main ones are the fact it's one of the few times Flynn has tried to write a classic spy thriller rather than one in the counter-terrorist sub-genre he created (other efforts were The Third Option, Separation Of Power (geopolitical thriller) and Act Of Treason (conspiracy political thriller), and that it focused on an intelligence service's worst nightmare, namely having their HUMNIT capability taking a hit. The Survivor looks like it's going to build on the themes book 13 focused on.

(UPDATED VERSION)

Favorite Vince Flynn books? My ranking from best to worst is this:

1) Consent To Kill.
This one's Flynn's "OHMSS", his "The Bourne Identity", the most mature book in the Rapp series. The writing is crisp with not a word out of place, the character development/interaction is his best by far and the plotting manages to make a traditional revenge story surprisingly moving.

2) The Last Man.
One of the few books in the Rapp series which isn't one of the counter-terrorist thrillers Flynn made his name writing. Instead, his last book is a extraordinarily well crafted "classic" spy thriller set in South Asia. The plotting, relevant themes/geopolitics it touches on and the perfect balance of gun-play and character interaction make this one a blast.

3) American Assassin
In the beginning, there was a college student who had the woman he loved stolen from him by a terrorist attack. That college student would go on to become a legend. Lots of character development, some devilishly fun interaction between some real life terrorists making surprise appearances and a plot which touches on when the war on terror really began make this a fitting prequel to how Mitch Rapp began as the CIA's blunt instrument.

4) Protect And Defend
One of Flynn's counter-terrorist thrillers. But this book has the distinction in the series for having by far the highest body count. It's a story of how Mitch goes to blood soaked lengths to protect the few people alive he cares about. His boss for starters.

5) Transfer Of Power
The original counter-terrorist thriller. Reason for the rank is that some of the geopolitics is a bit off (Hezbollah and Hamas were run by Saddam Hussein's enemies) the writing style is clunky and some of the character interaction isn't as great as it would later become. But, Mr Flynn managed to use this book as one heck of an establishing character moment for Mitch Rapp, and with a plot that touches on the early days of counter-terrorism, and how political stupidity can disastrously screw up fighting this geopolitical threat if unchecked.

6) The Third Option
In this book, Flynn tries to do a classic spy novel. Office politics at the CIA just got deadly and while hunting down a hit-squad which is preparing to strike close to home, Rapp must investigate who wants to take his handler out of the running for the chance to head the company.

7) Executive Power
A counter-terrorist thriller focusing on the Israeli Palestinian Conflict. This one is a bit sub-par, due to basically being two different novels merged into one. While Rapp's off trying to make his new marriage work and do hostage rescue in the Philippines, the most sypathetic of Flynn's antagonist begins screwing over every single geopolitical player in the Middle East....starting with the deaths of Gaza's terrorist leaders.

8) Memorial Day
With its surprisingly low body count, you would think that this wouldn't be thrilling. But it is. This book is a down to earth scenario about the most plausible way a terrorist could deploy a nuclear weapon on American soil. Plus, the climax, where Rapp has to dispose of the world's most lethal beer cooler with only a Sikorsky helicopter at his disposal is one of the high points of the series.

9) Act Of Treason
Vince said that this book was a tribute of sorts to the 1970's conspiracy thriller. Rapp and Kennedy try pick apart a plot which delivered the ultimate "October Surprise" in the guise of a terrorist incident. And then they have a man who is one heartbeat away from the presidency to contend with.

10) Separation Of Power
Political thriller which strays into Tom Clancy geopolitical epic territory. No terrorists, just Mr Rapp, the most clever political antagonist Flynn developed and Saddam Hussein vying for supremacy.

11) Kill Shot
Mr Flynn said he wrote this book as a homage to Robert Ludlum, one of his primary influences. And while slower than "American Assassin", decent character interaction and the revisiting of a rising geopolitical threat in the closing days of the Cold War make this a good read.

12) Pursuit Of Honor
Part of a story arc. The ratio of Action and character interaction was lop-sided. One of the two books where Vince realized he might have to recharge his batteries....which he did with the prequels.

13) Extreme Measures
Not my favorite book in the Rapp series. A lot slower than the others. More talk and not enough shooting.

Ryan Steck (ryansteck) | 34 comments Thanks, Sammuel for introducing me in your above comments!

My name is Ryan, I'm new to this group! I run a Rapp fan-site, and am on Twitter @MitchRappFans

One of Vince Flynn's former publicists nicknamed me "The Rappologost" as I've made it a habit to study Vince's work and characters. ive been blessed to converse with Kyle Kills, even swapping minor notes not that long ago. I'm happy to report that, after reading an advanced copy of The Survivor, Kyle nailed it! The Survicor is easily one of my favorite Rapp books, and I rank it as high as my top-three!

I don't read much besides Rapp novels, as I'm constantly re-reading them and taking various notes. I've compiled a rather hefty Rolodex of scribblings and decided to combine them in the form of a website earlier this year.

The Kill Catalog you linked above was a lot of fun, and I'll update it once The Survivor is released to everyone on 10/6/15! I've had the extraordinary honor of speaking with Vince's family since his passing. In fact his brother, Dan, is someone I consider a friend. He too has a book out, though nonfiction, and can be found on Amazon.

For diehard Rapp fans, I'm your guy! Whether you want to know how many times Vince wrote the word "baseball" in all fourteen of his novels, or how many kills Rapp's logged, I will almost certainly have your answer! I'm not on Goodreads that often, but I hope you'll all join me on Twitter, the Facebook group: Mitch Rapp Fans, or on my site!

Besides the review, and kill catalog, I have investigative posts dedicated to pinpointing Rapp's borthday! I also wrote an article about where Rapp likely is during Term Limits. I've written a timeline of events leading up to The Survicor, and tribute pieces to Anna Rielly and Thomas Stansfield.

I'd be honored to connect with fellow Rapp fans, and hope you'll check out my site!

Keep the Faith!

Ryan

Hello Ryan, Welcome to the group. I'm sure you'll enjoy it here. I commend you for your effort at trying to slot "Term Limits" into the Mitch Rapp chronology. My initial theory was that it took place before American Assassin. Your explanation however is a lot more convincing.

Mills did say he would be more than willing to complete the final act of the American Assassin prequel trilogy, and mentioned sometime ago that he's contracted for a few more books. It would be interesting to see what he does with Mr Rafique Aziz, the night in Paris and reintroducing the French Contract Killers Gus and Mario from "The Third Option".

I'm most interested to see if he makes an appearance in The Survivor due to it carrying on book 13's story arc. He would be a massive asset for the main characters, due to the fact he can blend in well in most of the environments they operate in, is competent and has that professionalism similar to Mitch.

Hi Samuel!

Yeah, Term Limits is definitely after American Assassin and Kill shot, but before Transfer of Power. In fact, Term Limits, Transfer of Power, AND The Third Option take place in a span of 2.5-3 years.

I've chatted with Kyle Mills, great guy! He has a three book deal, which included finishing The Survivor. Vince Flynn only wrote one chapter, the first, so Kyle crafted his own prologue and everything else.

His next book will take place after The Survivor, but almost certainly won't be a direct sequel to it. His third book is when he's thinking about going back to write a sequel to Kill Shot, tying up the prequel trilogy.

I'm sorry I didn't see everybody's comments until now, I'm not on here as often as I am on Twitter or the Facebook group "Mitch Rapp Fans."

I'd love to connect with more fans, and have some cool stuff to share. One of Vince's brothers has told me a ton of cool stuff, and I like to tweet out things like that, and Rapp trivia on a nightly basis.

I'll try to stop by here more often, what a great group!

Cheers, everyone!

I noticed for part 2, you dealt with the antagonists who made the catastrophic mistake of going after the few people alive on the planet Mitch Rapp cares about. Although I found Eric Abel's death perhaps the most satisfying chapter Flynn wrote, I agree Imad Mukhtar deserves spot 7. Despite making a pretty decent plan, going after the closest thing Rapp has to a sister was never going to end well, and when reading Protect and Defend, I could almost taste the apocalyptic rage Rapp was feeling at the moment.

Thank you. Yeah, Protect and Defend is a really underrated book in my opinion! From Stu finally being dealt with, to the Iranian nuclear facility being destroyed, to Rapp hunting down Mukhtar. Nonstop action and a GREAT BOOK!

I felt I could justify putting the trio of guys that wanted to kill Rapp where I did, because the man that detonated the bomb in Rapp's house makes an appearance much higher on the list.

I've had a ton of fun writing those posts... but they really do require a fair bit of work to compile. Thanks again for reading, it means the world to me!

On a side note regarding Mhukhtar, I think the reason why he worked so well as a bad guy was because he was based on this man. A guy responsible for the most humiliating period in the Company's history and before Usama sent his minions off to New York, the most dangerous terrorist in the Middle East. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imad_Mu...

Ryan continues to compile the Mitch Rapp greatest villains list. Number 5 is very deserving of his spot. Planner of the first "epic" race against the clock threat Mitch Rapp was faced with.
