YA novel
The story centers around a girl around late middle school or high school age. She has red hair and considers herself to not be pretty, unlike her older sister who is stunning. Her family is somewhat low income. She has a very religious father. She tells of how one time, her father took so long to pray at thanksgiving that her mother ended the prayer by interrupting with "Amen," which the father rather disliked. Some time in the novel, her sister joins a local swimsuit beauty competition to win a free TV. They keep it secret because their father disapproves of television as being morally wrong, & would even more disapprove of a swimsuit competition. They think they can convince him to keep the TV if they hide the competition from him, but all the contestant's picture ends up being printed in the newspaper with the winner announced. He comes home furious & takes returns the TV without a word. Some things happen & eventually the father ends up either leaving the family or being kicked out, I can't remember. At the end of the novel, the main character's father shows up & when they meet, she realizes how much she has changed since the beginning of the book. I think that a significant amount of time passes in this book, the main character might be around finishing high school by the end.
The genre is Coming-of-Age
I read this in paper format

Rachel | 1527 comments Could it have been an older book (1980s)? If so, The Glory Girl has a character with a pretty older sister and religious father. Not sure about the rest of the plot though.

Here is a review from Kirkus:
The Templeton family of eight lived in a three-room flat above a store in a middle-sized city. To Linsey, the young heroine of this novel, spring was ""the cement warming as you can go barefoot."" When a teacher told her to ask ""Who am I? Where am I going?"" she began to keep a diary for herself, alone. But her life was bound up with that of her Bible-strict father, who (view spoiler); her older sister Kevy, pretty enough to win a beauty contest and (view spoiler). Then there was younger sister Arlie, brother Pem and last but not least Peas, an ""old soul"" forever tied to his chair. (view spoiler)
