Modern Tales of Na Fianna Read Along discussion

Here is a special sneak peek of book three as promised! This gives you a taste of the crazy road trip Cass , Aeden and Oberon end up on.

As we continued on, past several exits, the truck stayed at a moderate distance behind us and didn’t turn off. Then it started gaining once we got out to a long stretch of road that had no habitation and very little traffic.
“Um, I think they’re getting ready to attack,” Oberon said as he watched the rapidly approaching vehicle. “What should we do?”
As soon as he said that, something hit the back of the Land Rover and pinged off.
“By the bloody Fae,” Oberon cried, ducking flat on the floor. “They’re shooting at us!”
“Okay, then I guess we’ll just have to shoot back,” I said, turning around in my seat. “There’s a chest underneath the cot, pull it out and you’ll find crossbows and ammunition.”
I heard Oberon shuffling as several more pings struck the Land Rover.
Aeden swerved slightly to make us a harder target to hit. “Any grand ideas?” he asked. “Apart from hauling this vehicle out of here as fast as we can?”
“The Land Rover is perfectly capable,” I informed him, somewhat indignantly. “Just do what you Fianna do best,” I added unbuckling as I turned around in the seat to face Oberon and grab my crossbow. “Drive fast.”
“Yes, Director,” Aeden said with a grin and a second later he had pressed his foot into the pedal, swerving evasively from side to side so our pursuers couldn’t shoot out our tires. Oberon cursed as he rolled around on the floor, but he finally found his footing and grabbed one of the quivers full of bolts.
“Hand me that, you take the other crossbow and kick out the back window,” I told him.
“I love when you take control, darling,” he quipped and I didn’t have time to counter as I grabbed the quiver and quickly loaded my crossbow, setting it into the foot well so I could cock it before rolling down my window.
“Just keep her steady for a second,” I told Aeden who immediately matched pace with the truck behind us and I quickly ducked out the window hanging on to the frame with one hand and shooting with the other. My shot pinged the windscreen of the truck and sent a network of cracks across the driver’s line of sight.
“Good shot!” Oberon commented and sent one of his own bolts on the way, causing one of the Faeries standing in the back of the truck to duck with a yelp.
“Try to shoot out the tires,” I told him, ducking back inside so I could load another bolt. Aeden and I both ducked as an arrow came through the back window Oberon had broken and through the dividing window in behind the seats and into Aeden’s headrest. I yanked it out and shared a wide-eyed look with the Finar.
“That was close.” I ducked back out the window and shot again, this time hitting one of the shooters in the shoulder. He fell and his arrow went wide, grazing me before I could pull back inside. I gritted my teeth, clapping my hand to my ribs and feeling blood seep through my fingers.
“Cass, you all right?” Aeden demanded.
“I’m gonna have to be,” I told him firmly as I loaded another bolt, cringing as it pulled on my wound. “Okay, I’m going up. Oberon, cover me!”
“Cass!” Aeden shouted but I slipped out the window and grabbed the roof rack, hauling myself onto the top of the vehicle and laying down to get a better shooting position. I aimed and shot, a lucky shot that finally took one of the truck’s tires out. It swerved and I knocked my foot onto the roof to get Aeden’s attention.
“Pull over up here and turn around,” I called.
Aeden did, and I cursed and held onto the roofrack as he spun in a neat 180 and charged back down the road at the truck full of Faeries.
“What are you doing?” Oberon demanded, voice raising several octaves.
“Stopping them permanently,” I heard Aeden yell at him.
“You can’t ram them, Mac Cool, it’s a bloody Hilux! It won’t do a thing!” Oberon screamed.
Aeden didn’t pay any heed to him, and I slung the crossbow over my back and grabbed onto the roof rack with both hands. “Hold on!” I shouted.
“For Mab’s sake!” Oberon screeched from below as we hurtled toward the other vehicle.
But just as Aeden was maneuvering toward them, they gunned the engine and swerved to the side of the road, leaving the Land Rover to launch itself over a bump in the road, bottoming out before it crashed back down with a jarring thud, nearly throwing me from the roof.
Then came the sound of a small explosion and the Land Rover swerved violently to the side. One of our tires had been blown out. Aeden must have yanked the wheel to overcorrect as the vehicle skidded on the rain wet tarmac, because I was flung from the roof, tumbling down the sloped shoulder of the road before I came to an uncomfortable stop in a ditch. I heard the sound of a crash and just barely registered the truck full of Faeries speeding down the road, blown tire and all.

I'm not entirely sure of the context (which I guess is the point), but it sounds exciting. Rather funny that Oberon calls his own people "the bloody Fae." :D I vastly anticipate book three.

I love Oberon so much. :) And I'm cheating a little since I've already seen book 3 as a beta, it's soo goood!

Funny and suspenseful! And Oberon's presence makes the encounter so much better...right? :P
