I've been reading Ross MacDonald - a great American Noir author - and would like to get into the newer, Nordic Noir. There's a lot out there - and I'd welcome recommendations. I tend to be interested more in the mood than the mystery - in the tradition of Raymond Chandler...

Karin FossumKarin (?) Alvtegen
James Thompson (Kari Vaara series, in order)
at least those have all very strong atmosphere and feel. even if they aren't classic style like Chandler, those at least have a strong atmosphere. As do many others but I'm too braindead right now to figure other names... so as a start.
You might want to give Karin Alvtegen a try. Her books aren't Chandleresque, but they have that same capacity to suck you (well, me, anyway) right in.For a modern take on the Chandleresque tradition, and if you can stand movies rather than books, you might try the Varg Veum series (series #1 is generally excellent, series #2 not nearly as good).
hi - all good, but I would add:Helene Tursten, Anne Holt, Arnaldur Indridassen (MUST READ!), Mari Jungstedt, Yrsa Sigurdardottir, and Jan Costin Wagner. And of course Nesser, Camilla Lackberg and Sjowall-Wahloo.
I've just started reading Gunnar Staalesen's Varg Veum, he is a private detective rather than a member of a police team, but I really enjoyed my first book of his - The Writing on the Wall. They don't seem so easy to get hold of, but I've ordered an earlier one now - Yours Until Death.
Absolutely Henning Mankell, Arnaldur Indridassen,Yrsa Sigurdardottir. Peter Hoeg's "Semilla Sense of Snow" "Purge"by OksanenAlso Fossum, Lackerg, Jungstedt,Marklund,Tursten, and many more

yes definitely. The detective, Joentaa, has his own unfolding life story which is often reflected in the cases he investigates
