Upper Elementary Book Review discussion

This first book in the Dear Dumb Diary series introduces us to Jamie Kelly who is obsessed with Angeline, the prettiest, most popular girl in school. Why can't everyone see how truly evil she is? As Jamie is determined to make sure everyone sees the true Angeline, she must navigate mythology reports, unattractive cafeteria monitors, and tragic hair while still getting the fifth cutest boy to pay attention to her. And it's all chronicled in her diary.

So diary books are hot right now, and my kids are big fans of this book. I didn't like this series as much as I liked the Dork Diary series. While there are several academic references (like mythology and scientific theories)and some great vocabulary use, this book is much more consumed with poor behavior (jealousy, evil plotting, lying, etc.) and doesn't have as much redeeming value. Kids will enjoy it, and the most important thing is to get them reading, but this book did not sweep me off my feet.
