I agree with Buzz. It's a little hard to make recommendations without knowing more about your preferences. There are so many very different possibilities.
I second the recommendation of the Golden Age of the Solar Clippers, starting with Quarter Share. No aliens, no space battles, just a very likable young man learning about himself on a commercial space freighter.
Another possibility is the Honorverse, starting with On Basilisk Station. Sometimes described as a female Horatio Hornblower in space, it follows the career of Honor Harrington as an officer in the Royal Manticore Navy. Heavy with space battles and politics. Also, lots of descriptions of technology, but many people believe it's one of the best space opera series out there.
Or then there's the Liaden Universe. You can start it a couple different places because most of the books can be read as stand alones. However, I believe they're best as a series because they do build on each other. Crystal Soldier is first by internal chronology. Agent of Change is first by publication date. It's a very popular, even beloved, series, with lots of action, some aliens (I love the giant turtles). High adventure, not a lot of tech.
