Donald (dongor) | 9 comments The original meaning of 'kibitzer' in English was a person who watches a game of chess or bridge from the sidelines - a spectator or member of the audience. In Chessbase, it is an analysis engine (eg. Stockfish) that provides lines of moves considered best for the current position.

I think kibitz has a similar meaning in German and Yiddish. The engine observes and 'comments' on the game, just as human kibitzers do.
