"Fear can be a great motivator. But when one lacks courage to walk through the fear, the boogieman eventually gains enough power to paralyze its victims." Barbara Boyer, Courage of Fear
I have heard it said over and over again that fear is a lack of faith. Not only do I not agree with that statement, quite frankly it pisses me off. I believe my Creator is bigger than that.
Life can be hard. I, myself, can make it even harder. Take for example my writing career. In chasing a dream I dropped all semblances of security--my home, my friends, family, 9-5 job, etc--and packed up my car and moved thousands of miles away to California. Should I have been afraid of such a move? Well, one would think so. Did I let that fear dominate my choices? Not for the most part.
I believe fear is a god-given instinct; so therefore cannot be bad -- or lacking faith. It motivates me, challenges me, and at times protects me. It is truly a wonderful thing if you think about it.
It is only when I have fear without courage that it becomes perverse. Like any of our god-given instincts (lust, greed, envy, sloth, ego, etc) if I dive too deeply in that direction it gains power over me...then not so good. We must have one in order to have the other; courage/fear. Sometimes, some folks spend so much time trying to be perfect (god), they forget they are human and think themselves less for it.
Today I will practice embracing my god-given instincts... all of them... and work on being grateful I have them... one must to be sucking air!
