None of the space opera, but still encouraging.

Of course a space opera series or even TV movie would be good,

Too bad the deal with David Weber fell through.

Trike | 779 comments Well, we do have The Orville coming this fall on Fox (https://youtu.be/EmdShv8mc0w) and Star Trek: Discovery on CBS All Access (https://youtu.be/PjPVdbsG4bY), so there's that.

Also, Netflix is still talking about reviving Lost In Space for early 2018, with a darker, Battlestar Galactica-esque take on the show. I believe they're in post-production now, or close to it.

Scalzi's Old Man's War was in development at Syfy. Dunno if that's still happening, but it took them 4 years to turn The Expanse into a series, and we just hit year three for Ghost Brigades.

You only watch things if you've read the books? Seems kind of limiting.

I've seen The Orville - and I'm sad because I've NEVER found that guy funny. :(

I'm not really a fan on post-Rodenberry Star Trek (though I enjoyed the first reboot) so that's iffy for me.

I never really enjoyed the old Lost in Space and I certainly won't watch with it being "darker."

I AM super excited about Butler's and Jemisin's works...but I don't think I'll actually watch due to the darkness of the works. Hubby will watch (it all, I'm sure. LOL) and keep me abreast.

IDK how I feel about Name of the Wind. I never finished book 1, lol.

Dan | 89 comments The name of the wind trilogy is one of the best fantasy series out there, and Rothfuss is up there with Martin, Tolkien, and Jordan.

Seriously couldn't be better news.

And while the third book (Doors of Stone) has been in editing for a year or two now, it's actually complete, which makes me think by the time we get to book 3 in any TV series it'll be well edited.

(Rothfuss once (correctly) pointed out his books tend to be oversized so editing a 1000 page book just takes a lot longer than a 300 page book)

I'm kinda like this - I don't like to view a tv show/movie if I haven't read the book first (unless I didn't know it was a book).

But I also dislike most TV and mostly stick to reality creation shows. Shows like: HGTV, Face Off, Cosplay Melee (that was fun!), Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge (LOVED this one but it only had 1 season).

I'm trying to think of something else I watch but I'm drawing a blank.

Ronnie (ronnieb) | 322 comments The problem I have, living in the UK and only having access to free-to-air TV channels, is that by the time something "crosses the pond" and a UK TV station picks up a show 99% of the time it's already been cancelled.

message 14: by Heather (new)

Heather (bruyere) A heavy procrastinator like Rothfuss needs a tv show to get him out of his funk. Just as with GoT, it allows fans to see the ending and not deal with the repercussions of author issues. That said, GoT is the only fantasy show I can think of that I thought was well done. Luckily the rest have enough sci-fi that I think they could be quite good!

I only have an antenna but I do have subs through Plex of sci-fi channel and use Netflix and Hulu, which helps me cover pretty much any show I'm interested in. I got rid of cable 1.5 years ago.

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 142 comments My understanding is that the Foundation series is still in development at HBO, by Jonathan Nolan and his wife, but they are working on WESTWORLD first....

Dan | 89 comments Is Patrick Rothfuss really a procrastinator though?

When he says it takes time for revision after revision, I'd believe it. Wise Man's Fear and The Name of the Wind just fit together so well and magically. Rarely have I run into books like that where I just couldn't put down and immediately wanted to read again, they were so good.

As he's mentioned in prior blog posts, he could rush to get out a 3 star novel, but he wants his masterpiece to be, well, a masterpiece.

The Wheel of Time is maybe a good example of an opposite take. Jordan cranked out books fast but sometimes the quality was lacking (even if the overall arc was great). The same books by Rothfuss would probably have been four or five tight volumes with the same arc but they'd all be 5 stars.

the new lost in space is still rated pg. even though there are some near-death scenes, it's necessary for suspense.
