YA Book Gang!! discussion

This thread is for the upcoming buddy read of The Athena Effect. It will be read by Hanna, Janai, and myself. Anyone else is welcome to join us!

*Warning: There will be spoilers in this thread.*

How do you girls wanna split this up? I am a pretty fast reader. Does anyone wanna check how many total chapters there are?

The ebook which I'm reading from says there is 227 pages but I couldn't find out how many chapters. Still it's not a very long read so maybe to extend it two to three chapters a day?

Ok I just checked, there are a total of 25 chapters. Do you mind reading 5 chapters a day? That would mean 5 days until we finish. If that's too fast we can do 4 chapters a day...?

Or we could always not schedule and everyone just read at their own pace and discuss (label spoilers)

Day 1: 5 Chapters
Day 2: 3 Chapters
Day 3: 5 Chapters
Day 4: 2 Chapters
Day 5: 5 Chapters
Day 6: 2 Chapters
Day 7: 3 Chapters
Is this okay? This way we have more to talk about and more time to read any other books!

I'm excited to finally get to this. This was one of those books I got for review by the author last year and it slipped through the cracks. Luckily I still have it on my iPad so I can finally get to read and review it lol.

I'm going to start tonight so I get a head start on the first 5 Chp. :)

Accidentally I started on the first an I so regret it because it's a really great book.

Nope! Just did my first 5 Chapters for the day a couple days ago!
So far there are two Cals on girl and one boy, totally different. Cal, the girl, grew up in the wilderness everything from the earth, she's extremely smart and absolutely gorgeous oh and she has some type of aura power! Boy Cal is beautiful as well and he lives a nice constant party life. They meet, we know they're perfect for each other, they don't, two perspectives, great book so far!

Chapters 1 - 5

Plot - I can't tell where this is going. So far, I don't see many places for it to go.

Cal - I like how she can stick up for herself. I feel kinda bad for her. She doesn't fit in.

Calvin - well, obviously he's not a good boy. I don't know what I think about him.

Jarod - I don't like him so far

Phil - seriously the creepiest character in the book. He's just so wrong and weird.

Aunt (forgot her name) - she seems okay so far. But she also is clueless. (hide spoiler)]

I haven't started I've been super busy. I'll be caught up hopefully tomorrow night before bed with all the chapters that we agreed on.

Basically summed up everything I thought some what. I like boy Cal he cares in his own way. Aunt idk her name either is oblivious especially since her niece is gorgeous.

I'll be catching up tomorrow too. I read the prologue and first chapter but I'll catch up tomorrow and discuss!

Lol! So I read up to chapter 5. I'm liking the story so far. Cal has a unique personality and there's conflict and she's got "powers". I'm definitely intrigued...gonna read more tonight.

@Anna - I agree about Phil! He's really creepy and I have a molestor vibe with him :| I hope Cal keeps her knife handy! Lol

I'm up to chapter 16. It's getting really good now.

Chapter 11-15
(view spoiler)[ prof. Reed is super scary and creepy! He's the guy her parents were running from..and I have a feeling he's going to somehow get Cal to go with him, those redhead twins are super creepy. I just hate Phil so much for talking Cals aunt into selling her out like that! U know? He gives me such creepy Vibes. I think cal should move in with cal and his brother or his grandparents, save money and move with Calvin to the cabin spot or something..idk.. But I have a feeling it's gonna get even more exciting now! Lol (hide spoiler)]

Okay so I don't have to do a huge thing and try to remember everything I am reading I am going to break up the chapters, since I am behind still....


Chapters 1-4
(view spoiler)[ Cal (girl) is very interesting, I wonder what it would be like to go from living with like nothing to going to living with everything (in a matter of speaking). She sounds like a very pretty girl, but her eyes, no wonder everyone always comments on them. Two different colors. Blue and Green but only one of each. And the thing she can do with peoples colors or auras that is very interesting to me. So she has moved in with her aunt and her aunt's boyfriend Phil who seems like a total creeper. But Cal seems like she can take care of herself which is a major plus, being that she didn't know how to use all of the technology in the city. She has also met Cal (boy) who seems like an interesting character, he seems to be one of those bad boys that has a sweet heart underneath all of the bad boy image he portrays. He wants to know more about Cal (girl) but she just won't let him in. Oh and Rufus the dog....love how she just totally was able to send him the lavender color and he calmed down and was just a friendly loving dog. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 5-8

(view spoiler)[ Poor Cal (boy) his older brother that should be taking care of him is involved in some bad stuff and shouldn't be involving that in Cal's life. No wonder Rufus hates Jarod he's a bully. Oh no! Rufus has to go to the pound because he bit a cop...if Jarod could get his crap together that wouldn't of happened! So angry about that...I am glad they stole Rufus back from the pound...I mean yeah it's illegal, but I have a soft spot for dogs. I am surprised though that she was able to get on a bike after her parents had recently died on one. I know I would never be able to do that again. Caledonia that sure is an interesting name. I am glad that Cali is starting to adapt to her surroundings she does have the benefit of being able to read people and knowing if they are safe or not to be around. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 9-12

(view spoiler)[ Wow, this book has a very good plot line, I really like the way things flow with this book. I feel bad for Cali that she is treated so unfairly at her aunts house. I am glad that Cal got her out of the house and took her to the fair, to have her experience something she has never heard/seen/done before. The fact that she told Cal her secret, worried me at first but he seems to really accept her for who she is. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 13-15

(view spoiler)[ Ahhh they finally had their first kiss! Thank goodness, that took long enough! It must be nice to have a man that wants her so much, I love that feeling, I wish I knew if I gave off a color, and what color I give off. So the Project Athena is finally starting to be talked about....I was curious as to when this was going to happen... (hide spoiler)]

I'm glad it finally happened too! Lol. I like that he likes her so much, it's sweet. I also wonder what color(s) I'd give off if I could see auras... It's very unique and cool power. I like that I haven't read any other books with that which is refreshing.

Chapters 16-20

(view spoiler)[ So Cali has moved in with Cal now because her aunt has signed over her guardianship to Professor Reed. Cali doesn't want to move with him, and I don't blame her, something fishy is going on with that dude. So as Cali goes home to collect the last bit of her things, three big burly dudes come chasing after her, since Phil was a butthead and called them. They must work for the fishy professor.
The three big burly guys have now showed up at Cal and Jarod's house...bad decision guys. They almost get Cali but Jarod's motorcycle friends show up, but it is actually Crystal, who saves the day! Don't mess with a crazy woman, shouldn't men know that by now?
Cal and Cali have now run away together they are staying the night at Cal's grandparent's house, hopefully they will make it out of there safe with no problems from the professor.
Oh no they found her now she is stuck at the professors place, with his creepy people that he pretty much made, because of some drug "Athena." Hopefully Cal will find her soon. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 16-20

Ok so I'm really liking Cali and Calvin's relationship. It's sweet and honest, a very good first love. Their lovemaking scene was tender and cute. I'm also glad Cal decided to trust him and move in with him - even though it didn't last long before they had to run away (I was hoping he would go with her!) I thought she'd spend more time at his grandmas house, I was totally surprised at the end of the chapter when Max came for Cali! I really hope Calvin finds her or she finds a way out... (hide spoiler)]

I didn't stop there but read ahead a bit. I need to know what happens! This book keeps getting better and better...

So I just finished, it was soooo good I couldn't stop reading! Once I reached chapter 20 I had to keep going.

Chapters 20- epilogue
(view spoiler)[ this is where I was hooked and perhaps the best part of the book for me after Caledonia gets captured. I thought the dynamic of Prof. Reed and Cali, also with Layla and Michael, and Max ..was so interesting. I really didn't know what to expect! I was glad Calvin found her and she actually escaped! But sad Layla was left behind..I definitely wanna read the next book. I have a feeling the twins will be worse off with Max than they were with the professor, but idk.
I'm impressed with the book overall and I like the originality and characters :) it was a fun read! (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 6 - end

Characters:

Cali - still like how she could stick up for herself most of the time. She never lost hope in getting out.

Layla - can we talk about how great of a friend she ended up being? Seriously. She went up against everything she knew just to help Cali get back to Cal. I was so sad that she was left behind

Michael - I can't really form a thought on him. He didn't do much in this book other than betray the professor

Reed - Such. A. Creep. If your stupid gene thing is killing people stop. Just stop. Idiot.

Max - I don't like him very well.

Cal - he's awesome. He is so reliable and that's what I think Cali needed. For someone to be there for her.

Jarod - still messed up but is okay in the end

The aunt - she really did nothing throughout the entire novel.

Phil - I hate Phil. Even more of a creep than Reed.

But yeah, I'll read the second book (hide spoiler)]

I agree! I didn't know what to think of Max at first, but by the end I was like #JERK, heartless bastard!
Layla...oh I felt so bad for her but so proud at the courage she showed to help Cali out. It was cool that she could feel how Cali felt for Calvin :)
