I liked this book okay, but I didn't really get enough depth on any character. So the story moved along but I never really felt any passion for the characters or their mission. Zaphod Beeblebrox made me think of Donald Trump. I enjoyed reading what someone in 1973 thought of as futuristic. I also suspect this is like a cult-book where re-reading it might bring different insights.

True, no character depth! I really liked it a great deal, but that was due in large part to listening to the audio and enjoying the humour.
This is definitely the kind of book you get more out of every time you read it. I love The Hitchhiker's series, but I totally understand where you're coming from with the characters. It's more of a satire than anything else, not very character-centric. I love the humor and philosophy, but I find I don't have to connect with the characters to love a book, so the lack of character development didn't bring down my rating. I agree with Karin though - the audio versions are fantastic. I read a hard copy the first time, but a second time around I enjoyed it even more, because I tried the audiobook and Stephen Fry is a fantastic narrator.
