"Proud people breed sad sorrows for themselves." I so relate to that! There is a lot about Heathcliff's inner turmoil as a child that I can relate to: trying to fit into a world that has no place for him, and yet always making it impossibly hard for anyone to show him kindness without getting snapped at or thrown away as a response. I ache for him and yet always wish he would make better choices. How much would turn out differently if he chose kindness or at least non-fury in the face of cruelty.
Ok, anybody game to discuss the first 10 chapters? So much stuff in there! Especially the conversation between Catherine and Nelly. Would love to know what Nelly meant by "ignorant of the duties you undertake in marrying" Was it that she couldn't expect to marry AND raise Heathcliff up? Or that they couldn't remain friends after she married Edward?
