Hailey’s Comet visits in 1910, and the lost city of Machu Pichu is discovered in 1911. Oreos first arrive on shelves in 1912, and the US introduces Personal Income Tax in 1913.
1914 to 1919 are dominated by World War I, which for my part of the world is seen as our baptism by fire and our birth as a nation on the world stage. Still, the world kept turning in spite of this, as 1914 saw the Panama Canal open, 1915 D.W. Griffith’s film “ Birth of a Nation ” was released and the first self-service grocery store opened in the US in 1916.
The Pulitzer prize began in 1917, daylight savings was introduced in 1918, and with a look ahead to things to come, Adolf Hitler gives his first speech for the German Workers’ Party.
Meanwhile, in literature we see the publication of Sons and Lovers, Tarzan of the Apes, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Death in Venice.
