The development of the age of technology continues in 1920 with the airing of the first commercial radio broadcast. In 1921, the Lie Detector is invented, and the interest in Egyptology becomes popular with the Howard Carter’s discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun. 1923 sees the birth of the Talkies, and in 1924 J. Edgar Hoover becomes the head of the FBI. Continuing to grow his influence, Hitler publishes Mein Kampf in 1925, and the great escape artist, Houdini, dies in 1926. Lindbergh makes his solo flight across the Atlantic in 1927, the first Mickey Mouse cartoon is released in 1928 and the even to cast it’s shadow over the decade to come, The Great Depression, begins. F. Scott Fitzgerald captures much of what we recognise as being the 1920’s through his various publications, which includes The Great Gatsby. Virginia Woolf is another voice of the age with various publications in this time. And, straining the brain of students to come for decades, James Joyce publishes Ulysses.
