A guess only. One of Ruth Chew's books? Or ...The joke shop by D. J. Enright (1976). While keeping out of their father's way, Robert and Jane and Timmy unknowingly cross the invisible border into a strange and frightening world and are taken prisoner. The mysterious secret agents who call themselves Herr Brush, Mr Spock and Inspector Barlow do their best to rescue them, but without much success. The children must save themselves. But how can they? And do they altogether want to? They have fallen among ancient enemies, but they find unexpected new friends. And they learn new things: for the Dark, they discover, casts its own Light.

Thank You Amanda and bookel. It was a Scott Corbett book! Dr. Merlin's Magic Shop. I was way off on some of my memories but the illustrations I really remember. It was a 3 part series. Dr Merlin's Magic shop is book one. (and the only one I remember as a child) The Great Custard Pie Panic is book two and The Foolish Dinosaur Fiasco is book three. I am going to purchase all three for my young daughter, and me!
Thank you so much for the help
Forgot about that one, I've read it. Glad you found the book! I like Scott Corbett's stories. https://www.librarything.com/work/203...
Glad you found your book, Rebig. Here's the Goodreads link - Dr. Merlin's Magic Shop by Scott Corbett.
Dr. Merlin's Magic Shop! Thank you all! You don't know how long I've been trying to find this book! All I could remember was about what the OP did, having read it in the late 70s. I wasn't sure when I saw the cover, but seeing the interior illustrations -- this is it! Now I'm off to Amazon to order a copy. Thanks!

Not sure, but it was probably a scholastic book.
It was about a boy who discovers a world that can only be enter through the back a small shop. (I think candy, maybe magic shop or herbs or flowers?) The shopkeeper is a wizard.
I think there were cobblestone roads and maybe set in England. It may have been a series of books.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
