The Shining is narrated by Campbell Scott, and Doctor Sleep by Will Patton. Both did an exemplary job.Stephen King did Bag of Bones. It took me a bit, but he grew on me and I enjoyed his narration overall.
Stephen King seems to be the new ruler of this genre. I have read others but for listening I would add "Black House".This is the second book co-written by Stephen King and Peter Straub and details the life of Jack Sawyer. The first book is the Talisman and is very much fantasy - not horror. The second is Black House and it is pure horror. It is also pretty good, but be warned. It is disturbing.
I have not listened to a lot in this genre. Like Janice I have read more than I have listened. "The Shining" is currently on my wish list at audible.

I never got used to King's narration. His pronunciation of words containing the letter "L" my only description is that he "swallows" them. I know that this sounds trivial but once I noticed it drove me crazy. Ruined the book for me and I gave it up. Later read it in print and thought it was just OK.
The only Horror book I ever intentionally picked up was Lovecraft's Call of Cthulhu and Other Stories. Compared to what I've read in even Paranormal Romance, these were tame. Still, it didn't speak to me in any way so I haven't been drawn to any others like it.Wait, I take it back a little... I've bought works by Edgar Allen Poe and many of his short stories are pure horror. But I'm not a big fan of those either, come to think of it.
I don't listen to much horror but these two are my favorites in this genre:We Have Always Lived in the Castle by, Shirley Jackson narrated by Bernadette Dunne
The Asylum by, John Harwood narrated by Rosalyn Landor
"I never got used to King's narration. "Stephen King is one of my all time favorite writers. But he is the worst freaking reader of his own work. His nasal voice, his bizarre inflections (of his own writing!) Still love 'im though! :-)
I think William Peter Blatty did an excellent job with his narration of The Exorcist. The audiobook version of King's Under the Dome was excellent as well.
Good news. Above I talk about The Talisman (Horror? Fantasy?). My favorite King book. Then the second in the series - Black House definite horror. And I have been forever waiting for book 3 and periodically check. I was pleasantly surprised. Old travlin Jack is coming back. Peter Staub and Stephen King are planning the third book in the series next year.
Read all about it:

MissSusie wrote: We Have Always Lived in the Castle by, Shirley Jackson narrated by Bernadette DunneI listened to this book as well. The story was good; however, I found myself waiting for the twist-ending like The Lottery. For some reason I kept thinking that maybe the family were all ghosts (like in the movie The Others).
The first "grown-up" book I ever read was a horror book called, Second Child by John Saul. I have read almost everything he has published since! I tried really hard to like Stephen King, but I could never get into his books. I have read Pet Sematary and 'Salem's Lot.
For Halloween, I finally read The Haunting of Hill House, which I loved!
Recently I purchased a couple of books from Joe Hill, but haven't had a chance to listen to them.
Amanda,Those books were OK but not really his best effort. Try "11-22-63". And as I said above, "The Talisman" is my favorite.

I definitely recommend listening to or reading The Stand. I've been catching up on Stephen King's recent work lately (I read a lot of his books growing up), and I still think that The Stand is his best work. I listened to it last year after first reading it when I was 13, and still loved it. Plus it's a lot of bang for your buck (or credit) since it runs 47 hours, 48 minutes long :)
The Lesser Dead
Between Two FiresAnything by Christopher Buehlman is good Not sure if
The Necromancer's House. is considered horror it has Mages (warlocks) and witches etc I'm reading it now and the narrator is awesomely talented! These are on Overdrive and at the library.
Fall of Night Jonathan Maberry virual zombie horde plague!
V-Wars Jonathan Maberry anthology. the start of the Vampire plague, the second volume is the media and the affected stories. Not the typical vamp story because Mr. Maberry adds different cultures folklore. Muliple narrators!
Joe ledger series Patient Zero Jonathan Maberry Ray Porter performs the whole series. he is NYPD now works for a secret federal government organization to deal with "highly dangerous and secret missions) like finding the people who is infecting the world with zombie, and or vampire plague. Not too scary, military and science laced with action. I believe all of the authors books are on audio!

All the HP LOVECRAFT are by Wayne June ooh he's creepy!
I've just finished The Wolves of LondonAlthough at the start it seems to be just a story about an ex-con having to return to crime to protect his family it quickly turns into a combination fantasy / horror with some scenes being macbre.
Even though it's not my normal genre I kept listening to see what happened next - not realising it's the first book in a series and I need to listen to more to get all the answers.
In the Shadow of Edgar Allan Poe: Classic Tales of Horror, 1816-1914 Leslie S. KlingerAwesome terror oh the psychological terror.
I believe I had a short term break down from all these "ghost stories".
