Im super excited about this book… why? I'm not actually sure. But I'm going to go with the whole 'mysterious burdened boy" IJS. Here's to hoping its a good read.
I'm about a quarter through the book so far and I'm really enjoying it. What I like so far: strong main character; new take on vampires; no love triangles so far. And...it's well written. No jarring turns of phrase.
I loved this book. Tana was an great main character and the authors take on vampires was refreshing. I liked that there were no love triangles, Tana was not a helpless character who can't take care of herself and nothing was cliche in the book.
I'm almost 3/4 of the way through. It gets even better the further you go.I can't say I've read ALL the vampire series that have been written but I have read Dracula, the Vampire Chronicles, and the Twilight Series. In my opinion, nothing compares to the Vampire Chronicles - I couldn't wait for the next book to come out. (In contrast, I couldn't wait for the Twilight series to end. I felt it was three books too long.) Chapter 28 in this book is so very reminiscent of The Vampire Chronicles. The writing may not be as formal as Anne Rice's, but Holly Black's vampires could definitely co-exist with Lestat, Mael and Maharet.
Angie wrote: "I am so glad that this is a stand alone book! Finally!!"Right! (Even though I wouldn't mind if THIS book was part of a series.) It's refreshing to be able to enjoy a story knowing that there is a defined end.
Honestly, I'm not feeling it. I think that the worldbuilding is a bit too contradictory and that Tana is TSTL, IMO. Also, Gavriel speaks so pretentiously that it's laughable.
I've been wanting to read Holly Black, but have hesitated since a good amount of her books are part of a series. If this is a stand alone book, I might give it a chance. ;)
I've been struggling to read this book since april,so i'm realy hoping july is the month i finaly finish it!
I'm 230 pages in and I'm not realy into it.
thoughts so far :
Love the cover
The atmosphere reminds me of
The Fever Series
Not sure i like Tana.
My initial impression was that I hadn't read a vampire book since Twilight, although I'd watched plenty of tv shows about vampires, and I was very glad for the original take on things.
NO SPOILERS IN THIS! Don't worry :)I read this book a couple months ago and I absolutely loved it! I was very (VERY) wary of reading another vampire book after Twilight (and I've kind of gotten annoyed with all of the unoriginal vampire books on the YA Fiction shelves at the bookstores these days). So, I didn't really know what to expect and had low expectations!
That being said, I absolutely loved this book. It took me a couple chapters to get into it, but after I did, I practically devoured it. I love Holly Black's unique take on vampires and this novel has some amazing plot twists and turns. And don't even get me started on Gavriel.
I loved this one and I think everyone should read it! I was really not expecting to love it, and that's probably why I had an even greater time reading it than usual. I love surprises! :)
