Lena Star Trek Discovery starts tonight. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I've thrown caution and optimism to the wind and am actually excited!

Lena Sweet!

message 5: by Mickey (new)

Mickey | 623 comments I am curious about the Klingons new makeover.

On the lighter side of Science Fiction, I like the new show “The Orville”.

message 7: by Lena (new)

Lena Tassie Dave at Sword & Laser just pointed out that if it sucks there will be no end of STD jokes!

Mickey | 623 comments Star Trek Discovery:
I am already getting a headache from the constant changing camera angles that is distracting me from the storyline.

message 10: by Lena (new)

Lena I liked it! Michaels was a bit crazy but I'm looking forward to the next episode.

message 11: by Mickey (new)

Mickey | 623 comments I need a few more episodes, to be sure.

I like the graphics and storyline.
Character builds seems good so far.

I hate the constant changing of the camera angles. When in space I can see using the angles since space has no up or down. On the ship, I cannot see the reason for the changing camera angles. Spike Lee in the movie “Do The Right Thing” got it right for changing camera angles which represent aggression. In STD I think it was showing off the video technology.

Also what I liked about the original Star Trek, the shows was not dark in temperament. Many of the shows had some moral story behind each episode.

Also I hope most of the episodes are stand alone shows and can be watched in any order. If each show is a continuous story building on each episode, I will probably not watch it. If I miss a few episodes and come back and find I no longer understand what’s going on I probably will stop watching it.

Caitlin | 17 comments I thought it got off to a pretty good start. Great set pieces. Does anyone know if this is supposed to take place before the original series?

I believe the captain stated that “Klingons have not been seen in a hundred years?”. So my guess is between Original and Next Genration. Original was at war with the Klingons and Next Generation was at peace with the Klingons.

But then the newer Star Trek movie with the new Kirk remake with their time changing history where the planet Vulcan was destroyed and Sarak survived... anything goes and Next Generation never existed.

Now I am all confused :)

Scott What an unfortunate abbreviation.

Lena Was there a second episode after? I had issues with TiVo that I blame entirely on Oprah.

That was STD episode one. A football game delayed the news broadcast of 60 Minutes that caused a Showing Transmission Delay of your show in question.

Oprah I believe is a host on 60 minutes. I try not to watch news networks these days. Breathe in, Breathe out, relax...

At least STD did not lay an egg as in “The Orville”.

The review from Variety that I read online indicated that it takes place before the original series.

message 18: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin | 17 comments Hmmm. Mickey's explanation--that it takes place in the interim between TOS and TNG--made sense to me, but I could also see it happening before since in TOS they were at war. As for the new movies, I consider those to be a parallel timeline; it just keeps things simpler!

message 19: by Mickey (new)

Mickey | 623 comments Nope, I am not going to pay $5.99 with commercials or $9.99 commercial free just too watch the one and only tv show on CBS that I might be half way interested in.

Which I am grateful to Comcast and the Networks for charging money to watch each episode.

I need to read more.

message 20: by Karin (new)

Karin It looks like I won't be watching it since it's not on demand and I'm not going to subscribe to CBS. I am watching The Orville, however.

message 21: by Mickey (new)

Mickey | 623 comments Soon new episodes of “Dirk Gently Holographic Detective Agency” and “Dr Who” on BBC America will be on. Also new episodes of “The Expanse” on the SYFY channel will be on. Add Orville and my Brain Stem should hold together during the fall and winter months.

Canning season and Gardening season is about to end and I stay indoors for hibernation during those long winters and catch up on my reading.

Lena Oooh you can? Always wanted to try that but I was sure I'd end up with botulism and not jam.

For most vegetables I will ether: blanch and vacuum pack for the freezer, Pickling and water bath, or use my pressure canner for stocks and anything tomatoes. A pressure canner will reach temperatures that will solve the botulism problem.

For most fruits a water bath canner will work fine.

Me and my way off topics :)

Just watched the first episode. I'm assuming that Michael will be joining another ship shortly, which makes me happy because I wasn't enjoying the dynamic so much on USS Shenzhou.

All of the effects and costumes are great, but the alien make-up was so good it was sorta off-putting and hard to enjoy looking at over time. Especially don't like these new, reptilian Klingons.

Overall I was intrigued by it and I'm going to keep an open mind. My favorite Star Trek series is actually the most recent one, Enterprise, so my preferences are a little outside the norm, and maybe this one will eventually strike a similar chord.

It's great seeing Michelle Yeoh and my second favorite actress from Walking Dead.

Leonie (leonierogers) | 97 comments Have watched episode one, here on Netflix in Australia. Will watch episode two tonight. I'm reserving my judgement at the moment. I sort of liked it and sort of didn't, so will have to watch on to see what the next episode does.

I didn't really like the first episode of Orphan Black, but I'm eternally grateful I watched the next one, so who knows?

message 27: by Steven (new)

Steven Moore Caught a bit of it and wasn't impressed by that. It's been interesting reading your comments. I think I was watching The Vietnam War, but I'm not sure.
I'm looking forward to the sequel of Blade Runner. It's hard to imagine it will be as good as the original, which, along with Alien, are among the greatest sci-fi movies ever made...for different reasons. Of course, almost any movie based on a Philip K. Dick story is pretty good.
