Here are your November 2017 Mini Challenges!

RULES

** Books DO NOT all have to be mysteries. You can use any genres.

** A book can only be used once for this challenge, but can be used for other challenges (Seasonal, World Trip, Ultimate, etc.).

** You DO NOT have to choose books in advance, and can change your mind at any time if you do.

** Do as many as you are able and have fun!

1. Day of the Dead is celebrated Oct 31-Nov 2 (which traditionally involves visits to cemeteries), and November 2 is Plan Your Epitaph Day: Read a book that involves a cemetery, grave, tombstone, or bones/skeletons — or depicts one on the cover. (Suggested authors: Jefferson Bass (Carved in Bone), Alan Bradley, Shirley Damsgaard, Casey Daniels, Aaron Elkins, Charlaine Harris, Dixie Lyle, Leigh Perry, Amanda Stevens)

2. November is National Novel Writing Month, November 5 is Book Lovers Day and November 8 Young Readers Day: Read a book ABOUT books. That could involve a bookstore, library, restorer, collector, book group, or writer — or even the novel Fahrenheit 451 — just so long as it revolves around books.

3. November 10 is USMC Day and November 11 is Veteran's Day: Read a book that features someone serving their country such as a soldier or army nurse, a veteran, or which is set during a war (real or fictional). (Suggested: Madelyn Alt, Charles Belfoure [The Paris Architect], Kate Collins, Jasper Fforde, Dorothy Gilman, Sherry Harris, Derek B. Miller [Norwegian by Night], Anne Perry, Helen Simonson [Major Pettigrew's Last Stand], Jacqueline Winspear)

4. November 13 is World Kindness Day, November 16 International Tolerance Day, November 17 World Peace Day, and November 21 is World Hello Day: Read a book set in a country other than your own.

5. November 22 is Go For a Ride Day: Read a book that shows some sort of transportation on the cover that does not fly (Bicycle, Boat, Bus, Car, Horse, Scooter, Sleigh, Train...).

Don't forget to check out our group bookshelf if you need some ideas!

Sure I will tell my impressions on Detective Yakumo.
The strange is that I bought it for a mistake (I wanted the manga with the same title) but I think the novel will be better.

There are incredibly many, though not sure how many are translated in English (I read them in Korean).

Not cozy, but most well know ones will be All She Was Worth by Miyuki Miyabe and The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino.

The first is a bit old (first published in late 90’s) and more like a police investigation novel, while the latter feels closer to traditional mystery story. I’m a big fan of both authors, probably more for Miyabe Miyuki but she is not a typical mystery writer. Higashino Keigo is more focused on mystery and most of his books are pretty good. I like his Kyoichiro Kaga series, the most popular one is Newcomer.

Honobu Yonezawa and Nanami Wakatake writes Japanese style cozy mysteries but not sure if their books are available in English.

A question about: USMC Day / Veteran's Day. The featured character, should be a main one? Or a neighbor, for example?

Hi Marisa! It does not have to be a main character, secondary is fine.
