I know this is a little belated, but allow me to propose this theory about chapter seven: a theory just hit me over the head. What if David Brooke was a legitimate amnesiac, what if he saw these letters from people claiming to be his friends but was unsure of how they all connected (as he suggests somewhere between p. 380 and 388), and what if the whole rest of the novel was his attempts to piece those relations together based on evidence gleaned from the letters, e.g. the Bartok sonatas and the cottage in Italy? Let me know what you think of this.

I'm temporarily stalled at the mid-point of the book. Will reply when I reach chapter seven
