Rebecca Shamsian Was this ever addressed? It's possible I skipped right past it. Towards the end-ish of the book they discover some hugely incriminating text on Valdespino's phone that was locked in the safe. They keep asking why he didn't delete it, how it changes everything, how people "need to see this," etc. A few chapters ended with a dramatic mention of it. What the heck was that text? Are we to assume it was related to his relationship with the king? But the reactions don't make much sense if that's the case.

Cindy Ehrenreich Was it the threat to Kirsch? I can't remember if it was a text or voicemail.

Elspeth I dont think it was ever explicitly stated what the text actuallly said.
I assumed it was the text that Köves' assassin received telling him to kill Köves while he was in pursuit.

John Stamp It was never quoted because it would have given away who was actually behind the whole thing. It couldn't have been the threat to Kirsch because that was a voicemail wasn't it? https://www.amazon.com/John-Stamp/e/B...

Dipika Kumar I think it was a text from the King of Spain to Valdespino. Something that would give their relationship away.. That's the best I can conclude after completing the book..

I'll have to go with Dipika's explanation. But I didn't believe for a second they never actually "did it." But maybe the text says "they did do it."

Shreya You're right Greg. That's what came to my mind too.

Cagne I assumed it was some random text Winston (or Avila upon Winston's instruction) sent to Valdespino to corroborate the conspiracy plot against him, like "I killed the guy bro, as you ordered.", a device whose whole purpose was to keep us readers guessing, and then became useless after the plot was fully revealed. Maybe not the first message planted by Winston, as Valdespino seemed to have understood he had become a pawn in someone else's plan and tried to get rid of all his message history.

April Lee I don't recall them stating who sent the text or what the text said! I'm assuming the text may be from Winston trying to incriminate Valdespino for Kirsch murder.

I definitely agree that this was what was implied.
