Zakle | 104 comments I'd prefer horror and fantasy with fantastical characters/plots/settings. I don't know many books with this as a theme.

What about an action/adventure? Circus

And there is a kind of gothic feel to Airs Above the Ground, although the action does not take place actually IN the circus as such. Just all around it.

Rachel | 1527 comments Nights at the Circus is pretty weird and surreal.

Isabel (kittiwake) | 132 comments Geek Love by Katherine Dunn is about carnivals rather than circuses, and is a very dark story, although more magical realist than out and out fantasy.

Brittany | 312 comments Crimson Night by Marie Hall was okay. A lot of mixed reviews. Some loved it while some hated it. I liked it but thought it could have been better. It's been a while since I read it, but I think it has what you're looking for in terms of paranormal beings in a macabre type traveling circus. Succubi, vampires and I forget what else.

The Pilo Family Circus by Will Elliott The Pilo Family Circus by Will Elliott

I haven't read this yet but its often recommend on the Horror Aficionados Group

Summary "...plunges Jamie into the horrific alternate universe that is the centuries-old Pilo Family Circus, a borderline world between Hell and Earth ..."

Rosa (rosaiglarsh) | 5386 comments Water for Elephants is dark, but in a grittily realistic way, not fantastical. Probably not what you're looking for.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) For some reason I've got TV and movies on my mind today.

American Horror story = season 4 is all about a circus/freak show. Horror genre.

Years ago HBO had an incredible series called Carnavale. It was dark, gritty and very creepy.

Conjured by Sarah Beth Durst, it's YA and isn't that dark, but it's a fun story.
