Jacob (jacobaugust) | 21 comments Reclusive ex-Soviet/Canadian writer living in the United States, and "one of the most important authors of 20th century Russian literature" according to his literary agent. Vladimir Nabokov called his first novel "an enchanting, tragic, and touching book" and his second novel is apparently untranslatable due to the inventive use of language. His fourth novel was lost in a house fire and, aside from a recent essay collection, Sokolov has refused to publish anything since. A School for Fools will be republished by NYRB in 2015; no word yet on Astrophobia.

Wikipedia bio

Novels:
A School for Fools, 1976 (also collected in Contemporary Russian Prose, edited by Carl and Ellendea Proffer)
Между собакой и волком (Between Dog and Wolf), 1980
Astrophobia, 1985

Essays:
In the House of the Hanged: Essays and Vers Libres, 2012

It should only be noted for technical reasons that his mega=popular A School for Fools is KNOT=BURIED.

But we'll leave him here (even though he's Canadian!!) because of that one Между собакой и волком. Meanwhile, Astrophobia (" POSTMODERN PORN EPIC ") has been conveniently Grove'd for those of us with a not-Russian problem.

Jacob (jacobaugust) | 21 comments Sorry, I didn't think to check the rating/review stats before posting. Ordered both of his translated books, so I'll report back when I get to 'em.

Oh I don't know ;; our criteria are in fact a bit plastic.

Jacob (jacobaugust) | 21 comments Also, you were gone for the past few days, so I figured I could skip the "May I ADD Please?" thread.

Never! ; )

That thread's mostly for the convenience of BBC members (not needing to bother interpreting our arcane criteria) more than for my own need to exert TOTAL control.....
