What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

When my kids were young in the late 1980's we read a charming children's book and I can't remember the title or author. The story is of a small child playing by himself in the kitchen while his mother makes dinner. He uses a cardboard box as a boat and sails off to have adventures which the book describes (he has a stuffed animal as his "mate"). While sailing he rescues a chicken from a shipwreck and takes him on-board his boat. When he arrives back home from his imaginary trip his mother greets him and they have dinner. The last scene is at the dinner table and the rescued chicken is also there. The last line (and I think the story was told in a rhyming verse) says something like how she (the mother) always wondered how that chicken came their way. My family used to refer to the book as "the chicken in the kitchen" book and mentioned it when thinking about the concept of imaginary things showing up in real life. Does anyone remember this book and know what the title was? I think that the author had a Scandinavian name.

I don't know what book this is but it sounds interesting. Hope you find it.

The Wild Baby Goes to Sea by Barbro Lindgren seems more likely:
