I think Ronan is so prickly because he's hurt inside, so before his dad died, I don't think he was quite so prickly and probably communicated better.

And I have no clue about Ashley. I need more info.

His father's death definitely changed him. Gansey said he was trying to help him find the old Ronan, so he must have seen the effect it had on him.
I really don't know about Ashley, but I like the potential of this character.
