Oathbringer

Please no spoilers in this thread

I'm all in. I have to finish Words of Radiance first. Both books are massive so I'm thinking I may get two maybe three books finished this month.

Question: Can this be read as a 'stand alone' since it is the third book in a series?

I didn't enjoy the Mistborn series, so never started on these.

Will, I also had a hard time getting into Mistborn, but this series is fantastic!!

I've been reading Oathbringer for a few weeks now on TOR, loving it so far!

I'm in, but won't get a copy until the publish date of November 14.

No, it'll follow on from the previous two which were very interconnected.

Recently finished a re-read of book 1, 2 and 2.5. I am keen!

I'm in and have avoided the TOR bits.

Book 2.5? How did I miss that one? I have a copy of Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection -- time to find it and read Edgedancer while I wait for my copy of this book.

2.5 is a short story called Edgedancer and its about Lift - a character from one of the interludes. Its featured in Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection. My guess would be that you probably don't need to read it before Oathbringer but the events in it do take place after Words of Radiance

I thought Mistborn got better as the series went on... really like the new books in that series, kind of a wildwest feel

I wouldn't say it is absolutely needed but it does feature two major shifts in characters that will be in Oathbringer and Sanderson himself said it would be better to read it first.

Darn, I guess I'll have to squeeze it in.

So to read, with some understanding, Oathbringer I have to read three other books first?

Think I'll sit this one out, then.

It really don't make sense to read it first. I want to join in but... Plus I need 2.5, which is sneaky of him. I'm sure the book will have others that I already own too!

I will have to give Mistborn another try soon then, maybe I just gave up too soon :)

I've discovered 2.5 is a short story that I believe I can read in one day.

I ploughed through the first three Mistborn out of a feeling of duty as so many friends gushed about it. Then (exceptionally for me) gave the books away

I bought the book one and I'm on pg27 :) I think I'll pause and wait for this one to come out. I usually stick with the series if I start from the last one ;)

I started to read Edgedancer yesterday to prepare for Oathbringer. I'll join the group reading if I can find a copy of Oathbringer at a reasonable price... I'm a poor student :'(

Unfortunately, it's expensive in all versions. Good thing Tor has it online.

Getting the book today! I'm so excited! I finished rereading Words of Radiance yesterday, but I don't think I'm patient enough to squeeze in Edgedancer. I haven't read/seen any spoilers, just excited :-).

My Gosh! I ordered the audible version and guess what? They're having technical problems and YOU CAN'T DOWNLOAD IT!!! I'm so frustrated. I busted it with Words of Radiance and Edgedancer just for this. So, I've started The Blinding Knife until it becomes available.

I almost had a meltdown because I preordered it from my local bookstore and they said: "we don't see it, we'll get more in on Friday, or Monday at the latest." But they found one for me and I'm all set. Whew!

My shipment says it should be here today by 8 PM. Hmmm, we will see.

Ok, finally got my audiobook. I'll start it tomorrow.

My book came today, but still wanted to finish Edgedancer before I start Oathbringer

I have my copy! Finally! First impressions.... its a surprisingly thin book considering its page count....

Well, my first impression is that it seems to be developing a little slower than the first 2 and 1/2 books. With the main characters already established I thought it might move a little quicker. However, it's really well written and I am really enjoying it.

Totally with you there Tnkw01. Im about 250 pages in and the slow pacing is something of a surprise. Still, there heve been some great scenes already ( Kaladins rerurn to Hearthstone for example). Ive been looking forward to this for a long time and and it lives up to expectations so far

Same as Tnkw01 and Jason, I was really surprised by the slow pacing in Part I. I was expecting everyone running around shouting "THE WORLD IS ENDING!".

Also, I am reminded of how badly I would fit in Roshar. I'm left-handed, dislike sweet stuff and I have dark brown eyes. I would be a starving, really clumsy peasant!

I'm somewhere in the middle now and I think is a book which maintains the high quality of the series. I can say that there is less action in relation to the previous ones, I like, nevertheless, the fact that it focuses even more on the characters, showing us their inner struggle to find their place. I especially like the fact that we learn things about the dark past of Dalinar, there is a lot of thinking about war and violence in these chapters.

I think that is the main pro and con of this book for me so far. The last book ended with that vibe, "the world is going to come crashing down", then Sanderson hits the brakes and says 'aren't we being a little dramatic? Does that sound realistic?' And then we feel kinda silly because we made assumptions based on previous stories, but at the same time he gave us that expectation with misleading information.

I love love love this book/series!!!!

A worthy installment to one of the finest fantasy adventure series ever written..
That said, I think BS focused more on setting ground for the following books. It's tantalizing enough, but I think it takes from the book as a solid experience..
