Audible’s new romance audiobooks service uses machine learning to jump to the sex scenes

Dee (austhokie) | 1974 comments i'll admit that i'm intrigued...hmmm

so as i understand it - its essentially an audiobook streaming service for romance books - similar to KU (and there is a discount if you have KU?)

Laurie (barksbooks) (barklesswagmore) Can you create one for horror? I'd subscribe to that without a second thought!

Laurie (barksbooks) (barklesswagmore) Wow, are we still stuck in the 80's with these comments?

"Let’s admit it: you probably aren’t reading that romance novel for the plot. Or its literary value. Audible knows this, and is today launching a new collection of romance-themed audiobooks that come with a handy feature that lets you skip right to the action. Called “Take Me To The Good Part,” the feature will fast-forward you to the steamy sections of the audiobook, says Audible."

From the article linked above: https://techcrunch.com/2017/11/01/aud...

I don't know about the rest of you but I do not read romance novels only for the sex scenes. I do read them for the plot and the emotion. Sounds like a completely useless feature to me either way but I am definitely interested in an Audible streaming subscription. Finally!

unfortunately, even though romance is a billion dollar industry - its still looked down upon as being trashy

my understanding fromt he feature - not the techcrunch article - ist hat you can listen to the whole book

Hi Dee. Yes, this service would be similar to Kindle Unlimited and you would be able to borrow up to ten books at a time and keep them for as long as you want. You can also swap them out whenever you are ready.

Happy listening! ^SS

This sounds like a great deal.

I agree - I do actually want to read the book - the "good part" is just a bonus in many cases

Mara Pemberton (marapem) | 233 comments Other than not being able to download Nora Roberts’s books through the streaming libraries most ROMANCE books are downloadable through Overdrive, Hoopla, Axis 360, Cloud Library, and Recorded Books Digital. E & Audiobooks.

message 13: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 1974 comments assuming your library purchases them for things like overdrive or subscribes the the other options

message 14: by Mara (new)

Mara Pemberton (marapem) | 233 comments That’s true. But I see it as another ploy to get money out of us. I like Romance books, but I am not that far into where I constantly have to listen to them.

Laurie (barksbooks) (barklesswagmore) My library has overdrive but the selection is small and the wait lists are forever and you can only put five on hold which means the waiting sometimes takes months. I don't know what those other things are. Are they connected to your local library and if not are they free?

message 16: by Mara (new)

Mara Pemberton (marapem) | 233 comments They are streaming download services through a library. Every library doesn’t carry Overdrive. You just have to checkout the different libraries around the country that offer non-resident cards.

message 17: by Jeanie (new)

Jeanie | 4024 comments I'm interested in a streaming service for mysteries or fantasy!

I haven't checked out all the titles, but is paranormal romance available through this program?

And I'm also one of those who likes the story and relationships rather than reading for "the good stuff". I really like the Nocturne Falls series for that reason... great romances without the trashy scenes.

Faith | 507 comments Apparently romances are written in such a uniform fashion that Audible also has an algorithm to take you to the "flirty" parts.

message 19: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 1974 comments there looked to be some paranormal - you can also select books by character types - of which there are a bunch of vampire, were's etc

message 20: by Jeanie (new)

Jeanie | 4024 comments I signed up for the free trial and am likely to keep going... Audible could lose a lot of sales if I don't have to buy the rest of several series I've been going through! ;)

One thing, I don't like that when I search for a book or go to a book's page, even the books I bought and that are in my library show up as in the Romance Package rather than In My Library and actually belonging to me--confusing.

I nearly bought Geekerella when it was a DD so I picked it up to try out the new feature. I use my Alexa for listening to audiobooks but she couldn't find that one--you'd be amazed at the samples she tried to play for me instead! I finally had to spell it letter by letter... she found it at last! A couple chapters in and I'm kinda glad I waited and got it for free... hope it picks up and gets better soon.

There's a special Promotions area for that.

message 23: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (delta108) As I was viewing the list of books, I could not understand the order. They are not grouped by author or alphabetically or by romantic style and when I did a search it threw me out of the “Romantic” app and back into the general library. Now the idea is intriguing but what is not intriguing is paging through 56 pages to see if your app will carry the books and authors I’m interested in.
